Lightbulb New forum suggestion : HEXUS.Guides or HEXUS.User-Guides

I think it would be a great idea if we had a forum where people could write their own guides/FAQ's/Walkthroughs/etc for other users.

For example, people could write things like 'Overclocking an A64', 'MP3 for beginners', 'Modding case windows', 'Getting started with Linux' etc.

I could be a very useful resource if people used it properly and help reduce a lot of frequently recurring questions in other forums. I suppose kind of like a WiKi.

I think that's a great idea - articles in the style of this all kept in a new section with it's own header link from hexus.net, or possibly a subforum in .community.

There are some brilliant people around here who could write some awesome guides and share their knowledge. A sub forum where they could post guides/articles, with ongoing feedback and interaction, and could be a real asset to the forums, plus draw a few more readers to the forums and Hexus in the process. Could be a great edition for the new year.

It would not need to be that popular, in fact not being very popular would help. A new guide every few days would be enough, no? A case of quality over quantity for a change.

If people wrote good reviews or guide in the forums, would you consider putting them on the website then?

I mean this in the nicest possible way mate, but I think you are missing the point Iain

Hexus.net's main website is for Hexus staff to submit articles to. I'm talking about a community lead resourse, where forum members can write and post thier own guides/FAQ's/articles and people could updated, amend, ask questions, correct/verify information and share there own thoughts on someones guide. I dont see many guides on Hexus.net anyway (no offence like).

Heck, you never know, you might even get a few worth publishing on the main portal. But just because a guide may not seem suitable for the main pages of Hexus.net, does not mean it could not be invaluable for other forum (internet) users.

I have done google searches for guides many times, and most of the usful ones i have found were writen by forum users on sub forums like the one i'm suggesting, but most are American. It would be nice to find a few on the Hexus forums.

If you think it cant work, i think you are vastly underestimating the Hexus community and the knowlege and willingness to help others many have. Whether or not people would take the to make it work time remains to be seen, but i think it would be an experiment worth trying.

there are a lot of stickys in these forums with good how to's and interesting notes and posts.

They are very useful, I don't see a need for a forum for "user inputed" walk through.

If you search the forum you'll probably find the topic you are searching for information on has been covered at least once with at least some information that will be useful to your task.

I don't see the point myself.
    It is Inevitable.....

Maybe I should have been more clear, content like that will be put on the site, if you write decent enough content then it will be put up. We'd prefer to use the site to store that content as we don't want tutorials and guides split across two portals.

Sorry, i get you. Even obscure non-mainstream type stuff? I was kind of thinking that the forum could have sticky for guide requests you see.

Write it and we'll consider it. That being said if it doesn't go on the site we still won't (for the moment anyway) be opening another forum as it doesn't make it easy to find said guides, tutorials, etc. Most regular visitors to the forum just visit the sub forums they're interested in so any guides would be left in those forums so they can be found. They may be made stickies or if there are enough of them then a sub forum may be created within the appropriate forum. If we created one forum just for guides then it would need to reflect all the other appropriate forums within its structure and that level of granularity would be a nightmare to manage and use.
