you can always save them locally if you want to keep them, and 70 messages for nigh on 15000 users is a lot of storage space
Very true - one site I admin on currently has the vast percentage of it's database (which is serveral Gb in size) taken up by saved PM's ... and we're having to have a major prune to get rid of the majority of this.
As Herulach says, there's an option at the bottom right of the PM pane to:

And as has been mentioned, you'd be surprised how quickly you start to stretch your resources once you start raising storage limits by just a little. The company that I'm working for at the moment ran into some potentially serious problems some months back after doing something very similar.
I fill mine up and save it to a text file incase I need any of them again.
