/me raises a hand
i don't have a problem with the adverts really (apart from when the new square one fails to load and i need to hit the back button twice to get to the forum from a post), but i'm all for supporting the big H :)

That doesnt look that bad, so long as it isnt flashy, which would be annoying.
I tend to have adblcok running on most sites except places like hexus, as the adverts are fairly intrusive. Those adword things though, goddamn i hate those, they get in the way of everything, and are basically far too intrusive.
@dave87:
THeres a plug in for ff that lets you resize text boxes. Resizeable textarea iirc.
Just had a thought David (i know, amazing isn't it?). If there was the option for paying to remove the adverts, how about a text only/mobile friendly version of the site and forums?
Would be good when i'm stuck on a frighteningly slow offshore connection, or for using on my P990i :)
1.) Using the Ten-Tenths forum again as an example they tried the "pay to remove the adverts from where your avatar should be" - it failed a VERY small proportion of users paid up
2.) Saying you'll pay up is very different to paying up - so many people say I'd pay - but don't. The majority of these are the 14 - 21 year olds. I'm sure hexus has read all this tedious research before
3.) paying a one off fee is ok but the fee would have to be reasonable - or people would have to contribute a smaller ammount on a more regular basis. Regular payments are hard to maintain.
For me one of the reasons this site works is because a.) a reasonable size usr base b.) the varaity of the user base.
Starting off a forum as a pay site - making a large user base suddenly subscribe won't work, not with out significant drop off (assuming a large part if the 14-21 year old group).
i'll be honest and say I wouldn't pay to use this forum, while there are some fun and very interesting dicussions there is nothing "special" on hexus, more so if the user base dropped due to forced subscription.
Subscription for the news based service on the main site ? maybe, but doubtful, with respect there is nothing on hexus that would make me open my wallet.
Just please don't do a bit-trusted forums on us!
At present its okay, because the adds are at the top and the bottom (also no context sensative stuff)
But with bt one day they decided to put hudge banners down the right, this bugged the crap outta me, because as such you lost x pixels ALL THE TIME.
With them at the top and the bottom, its much less obtrusive. only thing is, having it below/above the quick reply box might be better, i prefer to have my input boxes as landscape, rather than square.
I don't really mind the adverts as long as it supports you guys then I'm fine with it :)
We will never do that. We are looking at potential Forum index ONLY enhancements (features not width-threatening adverts only), but we will never reduce the screen estate horizontally for users. I feel its important, wherever possible that the forums still achieve 800px wide surfing for all you covert office surfers :P
Thats exactly the attitude we want - its very hard to make it balance, and whilst the team works incredibly hard to provide HEXUS as a whole, adverts give HEXUS the backing we need to keep on delivering you world class editorial.
Matt.
I don't mind the adverts either, but perhaps the ones on the quick reply box could close down about two minutes after the advert has finished playing or just after three minutes of being on display.
I understand the need for advertising so I'm not going to kick up a fuss as it doesn't actually stop me from effectively browsing heXus.
So that means no complete fullscreen adverts or adverts you have to watch before proceeding to the desired page as this WILL put me off heXus, it put me off Fileplanet, Megagames etc. for a while.
Just keep them tasteful and not too invasive.
Naturally, I'm speaking for myself.
really starting to dislike the one next to the quick reply box.
The movie / flash ones (although I hate flash) at least look tidy the google ad ones look cheap like so many other nothing websites that sticks them on.
tbh i didnt really notice it, if its good for hexus then rock on :)
I'll donate some cash if you promise to remove the horrible ads stuck into the middle of articles, though they are probably your biggest earners.
I don't mind most adverts on here..in fact I rarely noticed them previously as none of the other adverts on hexus are intrusive. This horrible square one next to where I am typing now though is just plain distracting. The resizing of the input box is also annoying too, it makes it much harder to structure your posts without going advanced or previewing.
I would be happy to contribute a few quid a month to get rid of just this one in the corner even - prefer monthly to yearly though, easier for me to keep track of :) Either way PLEASE work out a way to replace this bottom one, or at least move it away from the reply box.
