Hello everyone,
I currently use a Gillette fusion proglide manual razor.
the cartridges are quite expensive and im seeking an alternative.
Electric shavers are meant to be cheaper in the long run than manual razors but the reviews seem very mixed all all of them.
Im trying to get past the marketing gimmicks and find a decent shaver or razor that works well and doesnt cost a fortune.
I've been using one of These for around 4 years now and am really pleased with it.
Initial outlay a little expensive compared to wet shave razors but long term use definitely cheaper than razor blades.
Almost a pleasure taking a shave with this thing. Almost.
I recently wet down the opposite route, got a proper double edge (DE) razor a few weeks ago after being disappointed with the 9 bajillion blade cartridges coming out at the minute, all they did was give me horrendous razor burn and a 5 o'clock shadow an hour later, or they cut my face up.Quote:

Blades are dirt cheap, a current cartridge for a razor would do me 2 shaves before getting clogged and blunt, I get about the same from the new blades, sometimes 3 shaves (from thick stubble) I ordered a sample pack of blades (2 brands, 10 of each) and that was £6, the going rate for about 100 premium blades is £8 or so on ebay (the cheaper ones you can get 200 for that price). Only downside is the time to shave is longer, but I'm sure that will improve with practice

finlay666: can't argue with those prices, must admit Im basing my assumptions on Sainsburys prices, not Ebay prices.
And I'll also admit there's nothing closer than a hot wet shave with a sharp blade but.... this Philips/Nivea shaver does come pretty damn close, it's convenient and not half as much ag as a wet shave.
And quite economical too. I like it :)
I don't get as long a lasting shave from electrics, but the shave is so much quicker/more comfortable that it's more than worth it - it's good enough for a day and I can always wet shave for special occasions.
I can recommend both braun foil shavers and philips rotary shavers. The foil shavers are the quickest and give me a closer shave, but can't cope with longer hairs or a missed shave, so I ended up back with philips again and a decent mid-range model. Takes a bit longer to get a close shave, but the sheer beard munching ability over years without maintenance made my decision for me. Look for offers coming up to christmas.
been using disposables since i started shaving - been looking at a straight razor (cut throat) though recently
4 and 5 blade razors are sweet but only really necessary if you have sensitive skin and cut easily. I usually go for the cheapest 3 blade, I like to shave fast and have fairly tough skin and never cut myself.
Disposables are useable but I find it takes me longer to get a tight shave.
I've been looking at electrics for the past few months and there have been a few good deals at Argos. I don't mind how much the razor costs as long as I don't have to wet shave and electric shave. Anyone got a good electric?

I shave after a shower and find I can shave almost as quickly with a wet razor as with an electric, in fact I haven't owned an electric for about 10 years. It comes down to practice and finding the right shaving gel/foam/soap/oil that suits your skin. I routinely use a gel. but for a really close shave, shaving oil is best, with a new blade. It takes a little longer, probably because I take extra care to get it right!
Beards are cheap :)

I ended up getting a braun 380 S-4 foil shaver. £74.99 half price in boots.
the dry shave is great. havent tryed wet yet.
I was gonna go for the 390cc £90 but the only difference is the automated cleaning system.the refills are around £15 for three and last around a month each. im pretty sure the refills for the cleaning system would cost me more than I was paying for manual razor blades.
If you have the matience, look into safety razors, a good razor will set you back £20, brush £20 also likely, soap is cheap etc.
But you will get an amazing shave if you give it time, check videos on youtube for guides. Shavingroom also good.
gillette sensor, 2 blade, good, cheap blades. i will never use anything else.. unless they stop making the blades that is.
I used Gillette up until a couple of years ago but now use aldi lacura mens razor. You can get them as disposables or replacement blades in packs of 8 or ten for under 3 quid. Its a triple blade pivoting system.

I'm getting pretty annoyed with my razor, been using a Quattro for a while and the blades last me two or three shaves before becoming hopelessly clogged and useless. It's gotten so bad I'm tempted to pick up a cut-throat razor and use that to shave instead!
I've been using an electric shaver for about a decade, after getting fed up with cutting my skin all the time. I only have a cheap one though, and it isn't brilliant, not as good a shave as a wet shave with a razor, but I find it much safer when I am half asleep in the morning, and quicker as a result when I don't have much time before work.
