    Bed & breakfast recommendation

I am looking at a short break (friday - monday) to somewhere in the UK. It just an escape for a couple of days for me & the new girlfriend. I live in the south (Gatwick Airport) and don't mind driving for 3-4 hours but would rather not go too much further.

I am leaning towards the peak district atm, but having never been in a bed & breakfast I don't know where to start looking or things to go for.

Has anyone ever done this, or stayed in the peak district. Is there much to do in the area?

    Cheers guys

    Re: Bed & breakfast recommendation

Grew up on the edge of the Pennines so spent quite a bit of time there in my youth.
A lot of that was walking though. Not sure if that's your thing but there's plenty of good walking to be had (pick any stretch of the Pennine way) or if you want something a bit less hilly the Dove valley is nice.

Buxton and Bakewell are nice enough towns to visit but from memory most of the visitor attractions tend to be of the underground variety (caverns, blue john mine etc.)

No idea about B&Bs though. When I've something similar I've generally looked for pubs with rooms available.

'er indoors and I stayed here for a long weekend for our anniversary this year. There's a couple of rooms where you get a hot tub, and the breakfast is top notch. It's in the middle of nowhere but the SatNav got us in the right area, and there's a few nice pubs within about 5 mins drive. Also near Matlock Bath, which is kind of good...

The New Forest is lovely at this time of year if you don't want to go as far as the Peak District. Long walks in the forests and cosy pubs...

    Re: Bed & breakfast recommendation

Peak district is all lovely, but it's quite expensive unless you get a hidden away place people don't know about. Ruralretreats.co.uk has a list of slightly pricy but nice options (around the country). Wales is worth considering too - lots of nice places and some aren't that far away - brecon beacons for example, we found it was quite a lot cheaper, and the food was great.

Out of curiosity, how much was that per night? Does look very smart!

Can't remember how much it was, it was the wife's turn to pay, but I think it was about £300 for 2 nights. That was in the Granary, which is the one with the hot tub and duplex-style accommodation. It was top notch! They have special offers on every now and then, it's worth keeping an eye out...

    Re: Bed & breakfast recommendation

We also stayed at this place one year:

    http://www.ashmounthaworth.co.uk/

It's a bit of a trek, but it's on the edge of the moors, and it's where the Bronte sisters used to live. You can even walk to Wuthering (wuthering, wuthering) Heights, as well as the places that were in the Railway Children...

    Again, top notch brekkie.

    Re: Bed & breakfast recommendation

Actually, just remembered we stayed in Lymington as well, here. Really nice rooms, Lymington is a really nice place, on the edge of the New Forest and the pub across the road never seems to close.
That was around £300 for 4 nights, I seem to remember.
