    Boiler/central heating service

Who do you use for your boiler service and have you had it done yet? Are you organised and smug and had it done it in the summer?

I'm looking for a new engineer, as can't get hold of my usual, and word of mouth hasn't turned up an alternative local/small firm. Any recommendations or warning tales of using particular energy suppliers' one-off boiler service? Don't want to leave mine much later, so any suggestions welcome.

The problem with big companies like British gas is they want to sell you an insurance based monthly payment type service.

If your looking for a local engineer try searching on the Gas Safe register, At least they way you know he/she should be OK to use and you'll have some come back if there are problems with their work.

^ Indeed, I've been avoiding monthly payment options, but for speed I was wondering about a one-off service such as npowers £99 service inc labour + parts - ignoring any attempt to sell me further cover.

A Gas Safe local chap may be the way to go, just undecided at the minute.

I do my own. Ask around and see if you get someone local who comes recommended (still no cast iron guarantee I know). Modern gas boilers usually need very little in the way of parts when it comes to the yearly service. Anyone trying to sell you a ton of new parts every year is likely to be trying it on. Oil boilers on the other hand tend to need a little bit more when it comes to maintenance.

Checkatrade ( http://www.checkatrade.com/Search/Ce...ating-Engineer ) might be worth a look, was just thinking the other day I ought to sort out a service. Quite impressed by the cross references to the Gas Safe register n' stuff.

    Re: Boiler/central heating service

As we are in a council property, we have a major local contractor in (just today by sheer coincidence).

Pretty good here - PH Jones.

If you do it yourself, make sure you are up to date, apparently the safety regs for gas appliances changed last December. We need some remedial on the gas flue in the loft due to these changes, it has been fine for over 10 years
    Cheers, David

    Re: Boiler/central heating service

Thanks I have booked with npower for a service (spoke to 2 separate very helpful persons when ringing them up, for the record), but will want to get established with an engineer for general all-round purposes anyway so am still looking at local firms; thanks for help/links.

(I wouldn't realistically want to attempt my own servicing, as boiler is no spring chicken - & also for the reasons you mention, g8ina).

Well, see who turns up. NPower probably use contractors Then you can ask about cutting out the middle man.
