    Carefully

In all seriousness though, you just need the right tools i.e - Diamond dust hole cutters or tungsten carbide spade shaped drill bits, a steady hand and the right techniques..

You can do it with HSS (High Speed Steel) drill bits, contrary to popular belief on the internet but only for holes less than 5mm in diameter plus it takes an age and you will burn out at least one possibly two drill bits doing it.

If anyones interested I'll get out the digital camera next time I make one and knock up a rough guide

I'd be interested in seeing a guide!

Those skulls would look very good as a little desk lamp maybe with some red LEDs in the eyes..

Seems like we're on a similar wavelength They do a 1.75 litre version that's pretty much life size and would look even better but it's well over the £100 mark :/

Erm.. yes and no I don't knock around with the WI or have T.V specials made every time I enter a craft competition but I do like making things with my hands.. I learned a fair whack of simple origami this year because it's always intriguied me, I spent 20 odd hours embroidering a halloween costume because I could make something unique and I enjoy a challenge... You won't catch me judging busts made purely of Devonshire butter at a craft fair any time soon but if I need something and I can make it I'd rather do that than buy something cheap

Cheers dude, seeing as a couple of people have shown an interest I'll probably write one up

I'm not sure where the idea came from, I'm redecorating soon and need a new desk lamp, I had an old floor lamp I could steal bits from and I decided I wanted something a bit different, the bottle's just been sat on my shelf since I had a few people around for a poker night a few months back and it just... I don't know, looked right for it

Let me say one thing: There's no price on awesomeness

A life sized clear skull with red LEDs in the eyes, transparent wires and a suitable lampshade would look absolutely brilliant!

Out of interest, what type of alcohol are they? Are they vodka? 1.75L of vodka would last me a good few nights of heavy drinking; although judging by your avatar (Not much to go on, I know), I can bet you can handle your drink

    Too true

Me and mmh are currently looking into something a little more costly than both of the lamps I've posted already to be fair but much as I'd love one of the larger skulls £100 is still a bit steep for me at the moment, one for the future, I might buy a small one though if Santa's nice to me this year...

I used to be able to handle my drink, not so much any more but I think two litres of premium vodka (endorsed by Dan Akroyd of all people lol!) is enough to knock even the hairiest, most seasoned metal head about the morning after

Pop onto Instructables and enter the Make it Glow competition.

Great site, friendly people and the competitions are entirely winnable (from experience).

Mate, if I can manage it with a hangover I reckon anyone with opposable thumbs can get away with it

I knocked up a couple of JD bottles this afternoon both of which appear to have sold very quickly -

I do love a good pair

Took a few pictures along the way as well so I can knock up a tutorial for you guys at some point

    Haha jelly beans, nice!

Still reckon you should give putting some LEDs in the middle a go! If you want to learn about how to make some basic controllers for them create a thread and drop me a PM if you need any help.

Learn by doing bud, clue's in the name when it comes to DIY as my old man used to say

I used to be crap as well, still am at metal work!

I may well do dude, electronics aren't my strongest suit but I reckon if I could mount a dozen or so fairly powerful LED's inside one of the glass filled ones it'd look the mutts nuts

The biggest problem with doing it that I can think of at the moment is running them off the mains because ideally I'd like to keep one cable running out of the back and access to change batteries inside a bottle would be *ahem* tricky to say the least!

I've got a few more pictures I need to take but I'll probably start writing up a rough guide tonight/tommorow although Jack bottles are tricky little so and so's for reasons I'll go into later... Right now I'm marvelling at how quickly pictures of these things are going viral on Tumblr. It's impressive what a few well placed tags can do!

    Easy enough

Might be worth posting another thread - happy to help knock up a quick PCB design if you want.

Won't a lithium button battery + a bunch of LEDs last about a lifetime anyway? I presumed they were for decorative rather than lighting reasons anyway.

Now, replacing the lamp altogether and just having a 'glow bottle' with bright LEDs in would be another thing all together...
