Re: Do you know your neighbours?

Immediate next door are a bunch of nasty chavs, but the next-but-one their way, and the folks on the other side, are nice enough - we stop and chat occasionally but don't really socialise. And that's the extent of the houses on our side of the street! We say hello to the people on the other side but don't really talk to them.

And we're also moving house tomorrow, so we'll have to start all over again! Ah well...

The sooner you introduce yourself, the less awkward it will be.. When we moved into here we went and introduced ourselves to every house on the street, asked about kids (Friends for my sister), whether there's anything to watch out for, stuff like that.. Just create general chatter.

And good luck with the move tomorrow, hope everything goes well

A bit of both, IMHO. I've come across some surprisingly helpful and generous people, and had some flaming rows too. So yeah, I guess it's a community, at least, to some extent.

It's also, in many ways, a great enabler. You can have conversations, discussions, arguments, all without preconceptions. We don't know, unless someone tells us, whether someone else is young or old, male or female, or what class they are, what religion they are, what race they are, how well-educated they are, how abled or disabled they are, and so on. So you can have a discussion on issues with little in the way of preconceptions.

If you're able-bodied and dealing with someone disabled, it can be hard to pitch it right. Some disabled people seem to find an offer of help offensive and patronising, and others find the lack of an offer of help cold and uncaring. Sometimes, you can't win.

I try to let people do things themselves if they appear to want to, but might offer assistance if they seem to want it. But either way, I could (and have, on occasions) wound up on the wrong side of that.

Re: Do you know your neighbours?

I know them as neighbours. The ones on left have been there 10+ years, the one on the right have moved in this past year but seem nice enough.

We know their names, we exchange usual niceties around national holidays and festive periods. We will chat briefly in morning as we leaving for work.

We keep an eye on their property, if their bin has been left on pavement by garbage collectors we will move it in for them if we know they are away/likely out. If we go out (everyone in household) we will inform them of that and ask them to keep an eye out. That sort of thing.

Closest I got to living off the grid was plugging my notebook into steetlights at night and piggybacking off the odd bandwith or two, while I was homless in Madtown, WI .

Re: Do you know your neighbours?

I know of them, they certainly exist - they are even grumpier than me though and they seem to have the most peculiar work / social patterns that I would rather ignore them and pretend I live in my own little bubble than attempt to make some kind of faux-relationship with them!

Re: Do you know your neighbours?

At home, yes, but only next-door really. Lovely couple on one side, with three kids who my parents buy presents for at Christmas, and they tend to take parcels for us seeing as the wife is at home all day. One the other side, another very friendly family who we've known for about 20 years, but after they had a water leak and damaged our property, then refused to pay for any of the damage, we haven't spoken to them.

At university, not at all. They seem friendly, bumped into each other a while back and all said hello. Now they just keep parking cars in our driveway on the basis that none of us drive, and therefore our driveway is fair game, so I'm not interested in trying to get to know them better.

So, in summary, if your neighbours are pleasant, then yes, why not. If they're a bunch of idiots though, what are you meant to do? Best just to stay out of their way and pretend they don't exist in my view.

Re: Do you know your neighbours?

I know the other two people in my building ( it's 3 flats now ) but not any of the people in the adjacent building. Don't think I would even recognize them in the street. Been here 3 years too.

I wouldn't say this makes me antisocial just not ever seen them. I can recognize another couple of people on my street but that is all.

Different story at my parents place been there 15 years and know many neighbours. But that's houses not flats...

Id agree but for two forums that was not like other forums at all , wayyyy back in 96 in the frontier days when things were nice clean - sort off - and all new, but you see I was new then too .

Since then ive become crippled, jaded , old and for that most part apathetic to most things... not because most things are predictable but i am - hence my worldview in general , and worst part is there is almost O I can do about it .

It can really be what you want and beyond , or crap - its in your hands - heaven and hell is right here now passing and changing with each thought we create, like a sunrise waiting to rise above 2 distant peaks.

    I wish!

A blanket in the baggage compartment and I'd be fine.

Actually too many pilots on different schedules. I spend 8 hours and 20 minutes there each day and sleep through most of it.
