Do you know your neighbours?

An interesting piece on the radio this morning asserted that a large proportion of us don't know our immediate neighbours, and in fact, may not even know their names.

The point, I guess, was that at a time when the ability of humans to communicate with each other has never been larger, as evidenced by this forum, and mobile phones, for instance, most of us nevertheless have far more of an actual "community".

So do you know your neighbours? And if so, do you actual know them as friends, or just their names and to nod "good morning" to?

Yes,

Because I live in a village not a city or town.

Townies tend to be grumpy bunch.

I know my immediate neighbours pretty well, but go more than 3 doors either way, and I won't know their names (despite living here for ten years).

Local communities used to be built on the local church and activities, and or local pub
- that's how you got to know people (and villages retain that).

What's the equivilent now ? Local facebook group ? ;)

I wish I didn't know one set of them.

We know a few of our neighbors

People on the front actually keep their horses where we keep ours so know them really well. Guys on the corner is more of a how you doing side of things and the opposite corner the woman that lives there used to live across the street from us at our previous address and her daughter plays with our kids. The neighbor directly to our left has recently had a child and they are nice enough always get a hi off them.

It always pays to be civil regardless

Local schools play a significant role. We've lived in our current house for just over 18 months and know many of our new neighbours.

Knowing you neighbors well does not mean you will always be interacting with them.

I'm lucky enough to live on a small estate (13 houses!) and get on great with most of them

Since I live in the wilds of Canadia, fellow Moose are my only neighbours!!

Actually,I don't but I didn't take my pills today.

With the exception of a girl who recently moved in, I don't know any of mine. For various reasons I keep myself to myself for the most part......mainly because I've had nothing but crappy neighbours for the last 15 years or so.

Particularly like the ones who do DIY every single weekend from 9am and then complain that they can hear your music 7pm Saturday.

Is this forum really a community , or just role playing for our alter egos and suppressed needs ?

im housebound so no - don't know any one and wouldnt want too even if i wasn't , but then i find most people predictably boring and tedious which is why online forums is an easier way of overcoming those social pot holes.

Ive run in different circles online since 96 and had my most powerful experiences with folk I knew online - not all good but all far more rewarding than anything lurking outside my door ( most chavs , single parents u get the idea )

For myself it gives me chance to be equal again rather than that disabled person u feel sorry for or just ignore like a leper too .

Always wanted to leave the uk but alas fate has not been kind to me and broken more than just my body more than once, so now i do nothing but try to survive / find a way out of this hell , or as they say , die trying..

dang moose, I envy you .. i wont ask where but you got some mighty fine landscape there , you must be like an oasis of technology out there against the wilds , like the old man and the sea :)

I know most of my neighbours really well..

Most of them have kids, and with my sister only being 10, I think that's what draws everyone together. We'll often be sat on the front with a BBQ going and a good 20-30 adults getting pished while the kids have waterfights and stuff.

There's a couple of people that I don't know so well, that live further down the street, but I know their names and I'd say hello if I seen them.

I know my neighbors on either side. next door but one i used to know but they moved out.

good mates with the house we're connected too, and the one semi next to ours are a nice young family, both parents are down to earth and easy to speak too

I am known as the techno uber Moose oracle in the wilds of Canadia,with the antlers of technology and shiney.

Up until recently I lived on a new type of housing estate in gateshead called staiths south bank. Was designed by wayne hemmingway and all the houses are arranged around courtyards to promote that sense of community. It was a lovely place to live and I did actually get to know a lot of my neighbours, some I am still friends with even though they moved away. I have not met any of the neighbours at my new place yet and I doubt I will to be honest, I don't think there are many places to live like my old estate. I suppose what I am saying is that I think the reason we don't have communities is mostly a design thing!
