Well that's a very responsible attitude.

I wouldn't mind someone protesting hard about this, writing to their MPs, complaining even about migration and town planning.

But just to be "well I'll squander the water anyway" is frankly a disgusting attitude.

We have not had, and yes I know some of you will cringe as I write this the correct kind of rain for a significant period of time.

We do not want to go back to the 1976 stand pipes, because sadly I think fewer people know their neighbours and I would worry about the effect on the old and feeble.

I would also be there picketing the golf clubs who under their commercial licenses are allowed to water the greens thou....
    What are you on about?
Why should i 'watch my usage', when they continue to charge me the same?
Would you pay £50 for petrol every week for 3 months, but during that 3 months you could only put half as much in for the same cost?

Of course not, so sorry, but your retort was pointless

    That's a stupid analogy.

If you want to pay for what you use, get a meter!

If you think of your bill as a cart blanche to use as much as you want, it really isn't. If everyone did that the bills would rise a lot. A better analogy would be that your Sugar futures haven't yielded what you expected because of bad weather.

You have a responsibility to the other users of the service don't you think? To not be so selfish as to deprive them of any water.

What about anyone who is old or less able to use the stanpipe, which your suggesting is the only thing that would stop you squandering the water.

Sorry Animus. I couldn't even be bothered to read the above.

You are in one of your self righteous moods, and not only does that always make your arguments dreary, but you also end getting personal (mentioned stupid already).

Therefore, you ARE NOT worth entertaining in such cases, as you bring nothing to the table.

If you don't want to engage with the points, then don't.

This thread had better not get any more personal, by anybody.

Either play nice, or don't play.

Water is a genuine problem for so many people on earth, we are lucky, it costs us virtually nothing nothing, we can consume it most of the time without a second thought.

Its just that, ultimately, its not worth us investing in the infrasturcture required to provide 100% of our usage demand, in the 3% of years.

The same way that people scream blue murder about leaking pipes, yet sometimes, its cheaper to build new resiviours. Whilst it might be counter-intuitive to some, at least let the maths be done!

    So, leave our flag alone.

That sounds like a great idea. Especially North Wales. Have you ever met the people up there

I heard an interesting statistic once (sorry can't find a google reference for you) that the South East of England gets less rain per head of population than Libya !

Calm down, I didn't call you stupid, just your analogy.

Which, I would still say non-applicable to these circumstances we are in.
Quote Originally Posted by Blitzen View Post

Is perfectly friendly, yet saying an analogy is stupid is massively rude and offensive? I'm confused!

I am just saying that this is not a year on year occurance, the cost of increased resiviour capacity is very big, both economic and environmental, also there are a lot of planning objections to even the simplest expansions.

Yet its often cheaper, again economically and environmentally, to enlarge the storage capacity rather than make the pipes more effective.

The cost of electricity generation has risen a lot lately, yet it is still not economically viable to 'upgrade' the transmission infrastructure, we accept a lot of leakage there.

The demand placed by migration, industry and tourisim on water is very odd, given the quantities we use the transportation is also enormous. But we are very lucky, compared to much of even the developed world we're able to use water most of the time without second thought.

When the weather is exceptional, you can't. Its that simple. I strongly dislike the entitlement culture which says "well I don't care its not rained, its not my problem I still pay £xyz". It's not accurate, its not economically valid, and if we go back to stanpipes, it is those most vulnerable in our soiciety who will suffer. Because people didn't want to use a bucket to wash their car.

First, he said the analogy was stupid, not that you were.

Second, I don't much care who started what. I have asked numerous times for people to stop making personal comment and debate the issues. If you have a complaint, report it, but don't flame back, even in mild form, because it only escalates ..... unless someone dumps a flame-retardant in the thread, which I did.

Also, you won't get banned for questioning it. Though I dispute that it's unfair. As I said, any more personal elements by anybody, and I emphasised that specifically to make it clear it was NOT just aimed at you, won't go down well.

This thread isn't a personal playground for the two of you to moan at each other (again). Someone else started it. And others are commenting on it, but if it gets to be a flame session between you two, it ruins it for everyone else.

So, this thread is not going to turn into a flame-fest. If I come back into it at some point and find it has, all those flaming will get suspended. Not banned, suspended. Regardless of who, from this point, flames who, or who started it, if someone is involved, they get a holiday. And the rest of us can carry on with the thread.

Frankly, over the years, I've had to sort out so many threads ruined by two (and no, I don't mean you two) or more getting so personal in a thread that it ruins it for everyone else, and these days, I have a pretty short fuse over that.

So you were chastised, as you put it, as a shot across the bows for anyone thinking of carrying on in a similar vein.

Put it this way, I'd rather post a warning and stop it happening than start suspending people after it has, because by then, the thread is dead anyway.

So I have a bit of advice for anyone planning on a peeing contest. Do it by PM, or better yet, by email. But not in threads. In threads, either keep it civil or keep it quiet.

And Blitzen, you aren't the first to get a message like that. No doubt, not the last either. And I thought the bolded "anyone" in my comment made it pretty clear it wasn't aimed just at you.

    Re: Hose Pipe ban

To compare you Water bill to your fuel costs for running your car is in itself an unfair analogy to make that an even playing field one would need to add into the equation for your car. Insurance, Tax, Repairs and Disposal of your waste products making a car an expensive luxury for many reduce your car running to what you actually need it for and you can save money.
The same way as you can with metered water reading.
