As far as raised beds go, perhaps old railway sleepers might be worth a look?

Hmmm, I only just caught up with this one,... Not sure if sleepers are a good idea, as, IIRC, they are creosoted, and plants dont like creosote... Happy to be wrong tho.

Enthusiasm and impatience got the better of me and I rushed into it.

I will be laying the last few joists this week (weather permitting) and I'll start posting up a full write up Upon completion. Posts all 'creted in 80% of joists done then a quick beef up and finish with the final decking planks. Plenty of lessons learnt and tips for would be deckers will be posted though!

I will also be looking for plenty of.plant ideas, I loved those pics you posted Zak and want to they and create a.flower bed similar in style!

Actual sleepers are creosoted, but you get a lot of places selling "railway sleepers" that are various grades of oak cut to that size and treated in various ways. You can get them as green oak, weathered, treated, and fully preserved in creosote... and probably more variations than that. People call them all sleepers though
