Wood turners will pay quite a bit for it.
Wood turners will pay quite a bit for it.
Dave 87,
Ash as a wood has a myriad of uses, tool handles, walking sticks and ladders, to name but three. It is also highly prized as firewood because it burns hot and quiet, without spitting.
So that driveway-ful was indeed worth a lot of money.
HOWEVER:
Wood must be seasoned for several years before it can be used for tool-handles and the like, so you can judiciously console yourself, or be smugly satisfied, whichever pleases you most in private, that you got rid of it, rather than opting to take your drive out of commission for seven years.
I think it was a good call.
Petra.

People that think the odd tree from a garden is worth picking up and turning into logs are barking up the wrong tree (pun intended). Most tree surgeons are more than happy to leave the wood behind, the time and fuel involved in cutting into logs isnt enough to turn a profit. To do it on a commercial scale involves a substantial investment in kit (automatic cutter and splitter), and wood is generally got from large commercial forests. We frequently pick up large loads from sites where local tree surgeons are working, we get it for free to use on our fire. To remove the cut wood from site thats in the photos I would have to charge the home owner, not enough usable wood to pay for the fuel to run LWB landrover and tow a large trailer.
Heres a small firewood processor
