    Re: your worst DIY disasters

Trying to fix a hold in the wall only to have the problem become larger....hmm typical of a clumsy person like me
Or another time when I'm making these projects for kids, only have my fingers cut by a Stanley knife when I'm sharpening a pencil. I swear I will never sharpen a pencil with a knife again ever... It's posts a severe threat to my fingers (joking joking xD)

Then I will go out of my house and buy myself a nice sharpener. I will rather spend 2 bucks on a cheap sharpener than to have my fingers bleeding and my blood drooping all over the place.

    Re: your worst DIY disasters

Worst and most pointless mistake I ever made was simply attaching hooks to keep my conservatory door open in the wind. I had run out of small screws so I decided to "Bore" the holes out slightly with my drill to accommodate the larger screws. In doing this I put too much pressure on the drill bit, snapped it and with the remainder of the broken drill bit still spinning drilled into my thumb. They say live and learn and you sure learn after doing something that stupid.

    Re: your worst DIY disasters

Drilled a hole in a solid wall near window to hand a large board. Hit an obstacle and asked the builder (who was refitting our bathroom) if he thought there might be a radiator hose in this location. He said possibly since builders like to run them wherever they choose. Did I listen? No.

Decided to apply more pressure on the drill and punched right through...the radiator hose. Water came squirting out and it took a fair amount of thumb pressure to stop the flow while the builder turned the mains off...while trying not to laugh at me. He was sure to point out to my wife that he warned me . I paid him extra to chisel the wall out and fix the pipe while he was there /facepalm.

      • Virgin 10mb... hate them!
When I laid my decking (need to post the write up here) i used a big powered mitre saw to cut the 75mm x 75mm posts to length.

Never having done anything like this before I wasn't as carefully as I should have been in making sure the posts were flat against the back stop. Without realising it I cut the posts slanted.

I then went and used a spirit level (on the slightly angled top) when concreting them in. Didn't realise they were all slightly crooked until I went to attach the joists and couldn't figure out why the joists wouldn't sit level.

Had to replace the worst posts (with much much swearing as I had really concreted them in) and then plane down the joists remaining.

Under the perfect looking deck boards the frame looks like it was installed by a drunk one eyed man. Luckerly I over engineered it so fingers crossed!

    Re: your worst DIY disasters

I'm bound to have something happen now but nothing bad so far. I think its because I take a lot of time reading up understanding a job before doing it (Youtube videos are a wonderful resource now). Only issues I've ever had is cutting wood to the wrong length (I usually measure twice to stop this but occasionally forget when in a hurry). I did manage to cut through a power cable when cutting a hedge once but that was when I was 14...

I'd always suggest spending more time thinking through something before doing it than actually doing it if you can. Also never rush a job - it never, ever works!

    Re: your worst DIY disasters

Worse than drilling into my thumb was the time I decided to do a DIY flush on the Central Heating loop. Initial draining was succesful got lumps of swarf and muck out. Feeling pleased with myself added the inhibitor went into the loft to refill the loop and thought to myself "The pressure gauge is going up slow?" Wasn't until the wife started screaming I realised I forgot the tighten the drain cock back up.

    Felt like a total cock..

    Drew,

I'm referring your posts to our staff team as I feel they're commercial in nature. We have a formal system for commercial bodies to have a recognised presence on the forums, and you'll need to go through the appropriate channels if you want to provide that presence. In the meantime, please could refrain from making any more posts like the two I've dealt with above.

Feel free to join in with the rest of the forums as a normal member - it's always nice to have new blood joining in the varied and interesting discussions that get spawned here on Hexus
