Are you after a BBQ, or an outdoor cooker. I've been brought around recently to the idea that a BBQ should NOT run on gas, period. The flavour from lumpwood charcoal is what it's all about, that smoky charred taste. As such I would recommenda large but basic unit like this:

and a few decent sized bags of lumpwood charcoal
Gas for convenience, and the ceramic blocks give a reasonable BBQ flavour, but as cptwhite_uk says, you can't beat a genuine charcoal BBQ. But you do need patience, at least 30 to 45 minutes from lighting go starting to cook. Much lower cost too. The round/dome types (Weber?) are reasonably good value for money. Things go look for are heavy gauge steel, stove enamel cooking parts, and a solid feel (which is subjective!). Best to look at them in a DiY shop or garden centre (although garden centres can be expensive)

they often have them in the seasonal sections of large Supermarkets this time of year...I picked up the one I linked too for £15 in Morrisons in 2010...
Or get a 45gallon oil drum, cut it in half down the long axis, through the top, add some small hole concrete reinforcing mesh and you have two BBQs! (you might need to weld a couple of pieces of angle iron to make a stand, and you should avoid drums that have held toxic waste)
Ideal for a summer party!

Was £298.00 reduced to £197.00 - I logged into Tesco Club Card and found I had £70 of unused club card points. Using the turn £5 to £10 offer http://www.tesco.com/clubcard/clubcard/bigexchange.asp it took me 15 minutes to receive £140 of vouchers via email. Used them against the BBQ and managed to get it for £60 including postage.
Gas is better imo, no you don't get the same effect as a coal BBQ as standard but you can buy lumpwood charcoal blocks designed for gas BBQ's that give almost the same effect, gas is alot cheaper in the long run (we were spending £10 a time for coal that would be good for about 20 people), gas costs (about) £25 for a 13KG bottle and will last you all summer easily.
Someone left a note on a piece of cake in the fridge that said, "Do not eat!". I ate the cake and left a note saying, "Yuck, who the hell eats paper ?
