So I got the cable today, they sent 3 core & earth instead of twin & earth, could I use it or is twin & earth necessary?

Just don't use one strand then I take it?
Ok cheers guys, I'll give it a try tomorrow when I have some natural light, so neutral/live to the fitting & earth to the standalone connection on the fitting?
What I would do is use the red core for live, the blue core for neutral and the yellow core for earth.
Also write a few copies of a note stating what colour core you used for what and put a copy in the backbox and a copy next to your fusebox.
That way you or anyone in the future will know what colour is what.
The correct way to label it is to put brown sleeving on the red core and green/yellow on the yellow core. Keeps it all in the new colours.
It's black/brown/grey then bare, not sure what those are!
That's just the harmonised colours.
Use the brown as the live, the black as the neutral and the grey as the earth. If you can get some green/yellow earth tape ( B&Q ) wrap that around the grey.
pm someone your mobile and addy, text to say your starting so we can call the emergency services if you fail to reply every 15 minutes
