"it's a form of Lilac" says the wife. First she thought it was a budlia, then wisteria. But after speaking to an old gardening friend, they both agreed on the Lilac![]()

Thanks you two
Recently bought a house where the previous owner quite liked gardening by the looks of it. I didn't think I cared at all, but it's actually all quite interesting now!
Lilac - 3rd'ed
They can be really nice in early to mid summer ...late may to mid july. They can grow quite big and bushy with large flowing heads as shown in the pic. Probably need pruning back to keep it in check at around November / February time.
And of course most types have a huge fragrance.
Society's to blame,
Or possibly Atari.
Errr, if it was as blue as the picture shows I would suggest that it might be ceanothus (Californian Lilac). When in doubt I always have a look in local garden centres/nurseries for comparison. You could also take a sample along and they could probably identify for you.
I'd say it's a ceanothus. As Oldboy47 says it's sometimes known as a californian lilac, but it's definitely not what most people tend to think of as a lilac.
