Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
We have decided to update our back garden a little bit by adding a small lean-to, maybe build a few chairs from wood.
This is what it looked like a couple years ago.

But being the main walk way in the house and general gathing area (we don't use the front door) and the great weather we all enjoy here in the UK its gotten rather dirty and tatty looking.
The Idea.

I would have liked to go larger but due to restrictions for gas flues this well do.
So the work began...
Tools and screws..

The flower bed...
Because of the roof that was being added we decided to remove the planter and have a raised section of deck, most of the decking on the step up was reclaimed from other projects I did over the last couple years so it would match the lower deck.

Sizing up the deck (built a temporary frame at back while waiting on getting new 2x4 wood).

New frame to take boards, centre section is removable, I intend to box the underneath in and use it for storage.

Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
Top 2 images are removed?
Looks good, nice work, I fancy updating our decking but just don't think I have the skills to do the kind of job I'd demand if someone else did it!

Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
Top images fixed, not sure why that happened :/

Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
Very nice ! My DIY skills are zero.

First, bargain of the month
http://imageshack.us/a/img13/6261/20130429201058.jpg
Picked this up from someone on facebook for £5 including 2 spare sanding belts
Besides a few small bits the lean to is finished, all guttering is done
http://imageshack.us/a/img27/3838/20130429194948.jpg
And the chairs are started...

http://imageshack.us/a/img197/6936/20130429194957.jpg
There should be 4 chairs but I think someone used one of the chairs frames for firewood at Saturdays BBQ :( so I will have to redo one!

I must say that I agree with Zak 100%, if I had 1/10th of these skills I would be a very happy man, but I'm not a DIYer by any stretch of the imagination.
Some imagination for those chairs and tables eh ?
Hmmmm, where does Barry live ? Me can't help but wonder if he's close enough to come do one for me :)

Not alot done today, did trim around the posts and down pipe

I don't know where I'd be without use of the table saw, slicing wood in to 1/2 inch strips can be tricky without one!
http://imageshack.us/a/img10/5757/20130425163428.jpg
I'm not really happy with the chair bases (the 47x100 timber looks abit pants tbh) so I may change that for deck boards aswell so it's the same as the back rest

This is the view of the moon from under the roof, sadily the camera didn't pick up all the colours if it was giving off.

Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
What sort of footings did you use for the lean-to uprights?
-
Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
They are attached to the deck frame with metal stand offs sitting on slabs
-
Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
Excellent work btw.....I was thinking of building something similar at the back door of my house.....whats the noise level like when it rains on the plastic roof?....just my bedroom is at the back and im a light sleeper. :)

OK, so the load is spread over the decking frame. I guess that is one of the reasons for going polycarbonate rather than glass, to keep the weight down?
-
Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
No, the deck is not supporting any weight at all, the posts are sitting on standoffs, the whole deck is supported by 2" slabs with a base of 2" concrete under that)
http://imageshack.us/a/img507/1545/ae235.jpg
The reason behind the polycarbonate was cost, strength, weight and ease of use.
The cost was £106 for the 3 sheets (1250x2 and 1045x1) glass would be a expensive option, around £300 for 8mm toughened
Its very light weigh at only 16KG for all 3 sheets and it's very easy to work with and you can use a table saw to cut it
Just got small things to do now

Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
Really professional looking jobbie, great pictures also. Good to see a project like this- 'i'm feelin inspired'.:)
-
Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
If you want Toughened Glass you can try these companies in the North:
Impact Safety Glass (Liverpool way)
Kwiktuf (Hull)
CT Glass (Bradford)
We pay a business rate of about £12/m2 for 6mm toughened, 8mm I think is around £18/m2
However I would have thought 6.4 / 8.8 laminated would have been better for a roof above your head! Toughened glass will just crack and propagate if something hits it, or is experiences stress through heat expansion and no tolerance around it's edges.

Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
Only a tool would not make sure the foundations were solid :p
Did some work on the step up, replaced a few of the boards with new bits and completely rebuilt the small box part that's hiding the water meter.

Great job though!

Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
Now all the fun is over it's time for the bit no one likes - clean up
Because the deck have been down a while loads of crap has collected underneath it so I'm going to lift the boards and give it a good clean tighten everything up replace broke or damage screws
http://imageshack.us/a/img703/9793/20130505123755.jpg
3 boards lifed and you can see the state of it underneath, already found 2 pens, a pencil, a router bit and 20p! :D

Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
Nice work, great thread!
I'm always a bit worried about the crap underneath the decking, there must be a huge amount of dead plant-life under mine... and sooner or later someone will dump a cigarette or something through the gaps and then I presume the whole damn lot will go up.
Does the cleaner actually work well? I've just used the water-blast approach so far, and if nothing else it's amusing.
-
Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
Been out all day and have just started cleaning, just put the cleaner on and need to give it 15 minutes to work before I can fire up the pressure washer.
I found that all the crap that was built up under deck was wet so not much chance of that catching fire.
-
Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
So cleaning has started
http://imageshack.us/a/img13/120/20130507114627.jpg
Proper deck cleaning kit is always a good option
http://imageshack.us/a/img59/4407/20130506195304.jpg
http://imageshack.us/a/img708/5020/20130506182547.jpg
30 minutes or so later...
http://imageshack.us/a/img818/5400/20130506203930.jpg
Not perfect but you wouldn't expect it to be, I'll do a second wash tomorrow and leaver the cleaner on for abit longer to see if I can get it any better but all in I am very happy with the result.

Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)

OK that deck cleaner officaly does the job...
thats my next job cos my decking is a dirty embarresment.
thanks Barry.. you da man
-
Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
I am very impressed with the cleaner and was amazed how well it worked, it took a fair amount of work to get it clean but the end result was fantastic and the cleaner was only £9ish for a 5L bottle

Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
Now for the plants, when I removed the planter I knocked up a quick planter out of cheap decking just while I worked on the bigger stuff.
http://imageshack.us/a/img844/2967/20130511094554.jpg
Got some better deck boards now (38mm, same thickness as the deck I laid)
http://imageshack.us/a/img801/7214/20130511094608.jpg
The boss (ie the wife) wants a couple of new planter for the current plants and some new climbers we picked up last week
More to follow

This is the old planter I built a couple year ago ready for the knackers yard

I don't like waste and I need 2 new small planters so I decided to reuse the timber from it.

Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
Great thread. I'd like to do something similar, but completely lack your skills! I wonder how noisy that roof is when it rains?
-
Re: Some photos of on-going garden update (img heavy)
One of my kids James, roofs not to bad Joe except when the rain is heavy then it's very loud
