So my heating is making a noise......
So I was woken up this morning to my radiators buzzing. sounded really loud. Every radiator in the house was like this.
Not sure what's causing it but i bled the radiators and there was a little air in the system. The heating has been off for 3 days so maybe it has all settled while we were away.
I do have boiler cover but would like to see what's causing it before I call them out. £50 callout charge and all that.
Could it be 'kettling' ?
Re: So my heating is making a noise......
General pressure of the system? Our dropped when we had it switched off (for a few weeks mind) to the extent where it wouldn't turn on. Just opened a tap below the radiator to bring it back up to operating pressure and it was fine.
Re: So my heating is making a noise......
Is it a pressurised (unvented) system? If it is, then check the pressure is at the correct value. Low pressure may cause 'kettling', although as jimbouk says, if the pressure is very low, the boiler may not fire at all.
Re: So my heating is making a noise......
the boiler is a closed loop system. New boiler install 19 months ago. System pressure was at 2bar, i usually have it at 1.5bar.
been talking to a few work mates and they say it could be a little air lock.
Re: So my heating is making a noise......
Wife says that it made the noise once today when I was at work.
Heating been on tonight and no noise,b wonder if it was just air???
Re: So my heating is making a noise......
do all your rads have a thermostatic valve ? one (in the same room as the thermostat) should not have as this can cause a closed loop, the boilers have a blow off valve that is a direct short between flow and return to get round this, it may be a duff valve. ours used to thump when the system switched from heating to hot water pre heat, the bosch bloke got called out after 3 visits from the installers and a major hissy fit from MOI, diagnosed it without looking by my description, checked one rad had no TRV, told me never to shut off the entire system with the heating left on and proceeded to blank off the bypass as he said it will happen again in a few years but this would guarantee it would never happen again, he was right!
Re: So my heating is making a noise......
I blame the crap weather we've had recently Chris!
Ours clicks, well the pipes seem to upon start-up and occasionally they'll make a dripping sound but from within the pipe if that makes sense (?) gets faster and faster until it eventually gos away within a minute or so.
I hate central heating as I have 0 clue about it :)
Re: So my heating is making a noise......
My boiler has never been off due to the poor weather.
Seems to be ok now. No more banging but a little gurgly on the hall radiator.
Might have to flush it out when the summer comes :) and give it a good clean out.
