Timber Lengths Cut to size
I'm hoping someone can help me.
I went to B&Q yesterday to buy some timber lengths, I found the sizes I wanted but when I walked up to one of their staff they let me know that they don't cut timber, only the sheet materials?
Is there any place (in South East London) where I could go and buy a length and have it cut down to size?
The pieces I was looking for are about
2100x119x18mm and 2700x44x44mm
I still find it strange that they cut the big sheets down but not the lengths? Maybe it's more complicated than I thought
Much thanks!
Re: Timber Lengths Cut to size
Is it a transport issue? I usually just buy the whole length and cut it down at home.
Take a saw with you, or just use one of theirs. Cut it yourself, on the premises. I've done that with stock over 3m (for transport purposes). I've also used their tablesaw to carve up sheet lumber.
Re: Timber Lengths Cut to size
Transport isn't so much the issue, I could probably get a lift there.
We're up on the 3rd floor and I don't really have any sort of work space, the closest thing I've got is a dining room table, but if I so much as even suggest that idea I might get whacked with the lengths.
I also might mention that I don't really have any "major" tools, I have your basic stuff - hammer, drill, screwdrivers.. that kinda stuff and thats it.
I don't really want to invest in tools and workspaces for what might possibly be a one off job
Re: Timber Lengths Cut to size
You'll need to find a timber merchant and even then they may not cut to size but will provide pieces closer to your requirement; will be cheaper too.
You'll have to bring your mitre box and tenon saw and get to work in the car park!

Any respectable lumberyard is going to have half a dozen handsaws laying around for general use. They won't mind you using one. Just pay first, then cut them down to the lengths you need.

Had the same problem when I built my computer desk.
Cut at home - tenon saw, wood square, and a serform (like a wood cheesegrater) to take the last bit down to the pencil line. Great desk - takes A1 drawings and fits through standard doors fully assembled. Made it to flat-pack too for when I move :)

This.
Jewsons do. And they even pointed them out before I got a chance to ask. Might have been because I pulled up in a car and was buying 3m length of 2x2 outdoor timber :)
Oh, and they were about half the price of B&Q.

Thanks for all your input, I googled it and I found a Jewsons pretty close to where I stay.
Just need to remeasure everything and make some alterations but Will be going there to get the pieces.
Thanks!!
