Repairing Cooker Hob Swtichy Knob things

Hopefully this will make sense to one or two of you. We have a Belling electric 4 ring Hob here. on 3 of the rings, the switches seem broken. The rings work with full power or no power.

I've tried googling, but cant figure what search terms to use. What are the switchy knob things called, and do they regulate the heat output, or is there some sort of control unit that regulates all of the rings?

I'm guessing they can be replaced individually, but without knowing what they are called or what search terms to use, its proving difficult to find out what can be done.

    Cheers.

Re: Repairing Cooker Hob Swtichy Knob things

It will be either a low powered electronic power control using a variable potentiometer, or a high power control using something a lot chunkier. You need to take it out to see what it is.

    BUT

This is mains electricity you are messing with, and as such, best left to an electrician or cooker expert !

Re: Repairing Cooker Hob Swtichy Knob things

We had the element on the fan assisted oven on a Kenwood go earlier this year and it was easy enough to fix, I did have to remove the inner back plate exposing the fan and also take the back off to get the knackered element out (element surrounded the fan), took a few hours but saved loads in doing it myself.

I would recommend you kill the power in the kitchen for safety via your fusebox, better to be safe than sorry. I didn't want to be losing any fingers, getting burnt or shocked.

Have a look on Ransom spares, that's where we got our element from and they did provide a very good service, you can call them up if you are stuck in what to be getting or fitting and they do have instructional videos with some of the parts showing you exactly what to do.

Thanks Chaps. I had a look on ransomspares, entered the model number, and found a regulator. The reviews indicate this is the part to cure the no power or full power rings problem.

I thought regulators were more for gas cookers, so neglected to use that search term. Live and learn!

    Thanks again!

Just remember to kill power to the kitchen before doing this as I won't be held responsible for loss of digits or electric shocks!

Make sure when disconnecting the wires also to mark up a diagram so you get everything back to the right connector, take your time doing it and you will save loads of money.

Re: Repairing Cooker Hob Swtichy Knob things

If this is a recurring problem it might be worth replacing the hob - a new ceramic hob is only about £150 (although personally I'd recommend induction).

So would I. They're fast-reacting, relatively fuel-efficent, and IMHO, a delight to use.

BUT .... not cheap to buy, and won't work with non-ferrous. We ended up replacing several pans, including three frying/saute pans (various sizes).

So, good option, hell yes. Cheap to do? Probably not.

Re: Repairing Cooker Hob Swtichy Knob things

Just looking to repair what we have for as little as possible. Getting around to repairing it is on a bit of a whim, its not that much of an annoyance, yet!
