    Fence Post Driver

    This.. works

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-7...ce+post+driver

    truly... it was a doddle

Fencing for fields and stuff always interested me... I know a sledge hammer mashes the top of the post AND often makes them go wonky

But.. stick a big iron bar into the ground to make a pilot hole.. wiggle it...

then place post into hole.. and use this Driver

    It was a DODDLE!!

so.. if you wondered how to put in fence posts....this

    Re: Fence Post Driver

I remember a particularly painfull summer job as a student using one of those to build a fence around the cricket squares on Wandsworth common. 2 days solid use gave me some cracking blisters

    Re: Fence Post Driver

never buy one of those when you can have one of these instead

why have a two sided sledge.. when both sides do the same thing?

buy a Roughneck Log maul and drive stuff in with one and always be able to split logs with the other side.

I LOVE log splitting.. seriously.. I love it , adn the roughneck is THE weapon of choice for me

    Re: Fence Post Driver

    Add a Wood Grenade for those logs that just won't split;

...but be warned, as this reviewer on Screwfix discovered, sometimes they're quite tricky to get out.

    Re: Fence Post Driver

I have never needed a wood grenade.. that Maul always goes through or just stops on the top.

ignoring the driods on Amazon who sharpened it!! the maul is the win.

I think half the reviews are for a different product...maybe they all bought washing up bowls to split logs with...

but that review did make me lol

    Re: Fence Post Driver

I've not used the grenade yet myself either. I bought the bundle from Screwfix (this one) when it was on sale earlier in the year.

I've not split any logs for a while now, I'm still collecting/scavenging pallets to finish my log store

But the maul and sledgehammer are different tools for different purposes. The maul for log splitting, the sledgehammer for driving posts.

Yes, you can use the back of the maul for driving posts, but its a bit like using a flat screwdriver for undoing crosspoint screws - it can be done, but not the most efficient way.

    you're bonkers

it's heavy, has a long shaft (oo err missus) and has a flat surface

    it's exactly ideal.. I promise!

    Re: Fence Post Driver

Well, a maul is designed to split logs - the mass is being the blade 9which is shaped to split, rather than cut) and the momentum in the head is focussed on the narrow blade so it produces pressure. Yes, it CAN be used in reverse, but then the weight distribution isn't ideal, and the overall mass of the head is lower than a sledge, so the energy passed to the fence post is less - so more strokes, and a greater risk of damaging the post.

A sledge, used for post driving, has a higher mad, and a flat surface, and a blanched head. Its job is to transfer momentum (and kinetic energy) to the fence post, which in turn transmits it to the pointy end. More energy means it drives it further with each stroke, so fewer strokes, and les damage to the post.

I tried driving in a fence post with a three pound lump hammer. Waste of time, with the low max and short shaft, the head bounced of the post and I damaged the post head. A 14 ld sledge gave far more momentum, did the job in a tenth of the time, and caused less damage.

Yes, I could have used a maul (If I had one) but it would have taken longer, and been more dangerous if the lighter head had bounced off.

You generally get better results with a the correct tool, and it is usually safer too!

Its a bit like using an imperial socket on a metric nut - if the size isn't too far off it will work, but at the risk of rounding the corners.
