    Question Ironing -> Steam irons?

    Any opinions on these ones with the base station?

    I've "survived" some years without ironing, but I'd like to smarten up a little in the easiest most convenient way, even if it costs a bit more, so is there an iron that makes it an absolute breeze to get chinos etc nice and crease-free.

    Usually cant go wrong with a tefal/bosch/philips, but I must stress, get a good ironing board, it makes a difference.

    Re: Ironing -> Steam irons?

    This one, i know it seems expensive but I made the mistake of buying a £30 one from Homebase which only lasted me 6 months - I have had this one for over a year and still using the same cover - the reviews do not lie.

    Re: Ironing -> Steam irons?

    Brabantia are a solid make of boards, washing lines etc.

    I've been fine with a john lewis cheapo board, and definitely agree a board is vital.

    Regarding irons, the base station type is only for when you need to do a serious amount of heavy duty ironing and would run out of the water reservoir in a normal iron/can't afford to stop and wait for the iron to reheat. I went for a cheap russel hobbs iron (ceramic base blah blah) and again it's been great.

    But I only need to do a few shirts a week, so I'm hardly a heavy user.

    Re: Ironing -> Steam irons?

    After seeing how much steam can be kicked out by the combo it would be difficult to go back.

    We have a cheap ironing with a thick cover underneath, works OK but sometimes after a steam drench it leaves a rhombus pattern on ironing which goes after a while.

    Because I'm renting and I'm not sure how mobile I'll need to be, I'm not going to buy a £60 board. BUT, when I settle down, I think you're right, worth investing in this.

    Went with the John Lewis basics board and £25 Amazon iron. Good results so far, still a bit of work but big improvement over previous one.

    Re: Ironing -> Steam irons?

    tip... get something to hold the CABLE up . and make sure it's springy...

    Brabantia make an Ironing Board Cable Support.. like a car aerial, that clips to the board AND the cable at the top... stops it being in the way... when you iron the cable moves and the support bends to keep it taught

    Now.. I iron VERY LITTLE>.. I buy expensive ultimate non iron shirts and hang them wet and I fold carefully....but when I DO need to iron.. the cable suppprt stops me killing people.....

    Glad you got a good solution!

    Problem with chinos is, I'm afraid, operator, not equipment!

    More practice needed! The problem is deciding where you want the crease in the legs as they are tapered (and you are ironing flat something worn round) and the front panels if they are pleated.

    But the basic problem is that human beings are not flat.

    Re: Ironing -> Steam irons?

    Sod that
    Just iron twice

    Firstly when they come out of the washer. Then a quick going over once hung/dried for a few days.

    Much better finish in less time.
