Has anyone hired a carpenter before?

    Hi All

Basically got a whole bunch of wood related jobs that need doing around the house. Instead of attacking them piecemeal I had an idea of getting a carpenter in to do all of them.

Have not had an experience with this before and wondered if anyone could share their experiences of finding and using one (and some indication of cost if not offended to disclose).

    The jobs I have are:

    - New kitchen cabinets
    - New internal door frames
    - New internal doors
    - Floor to celling bookcase required in living room
    - Skirting board replacing
    - Stair rails replacing
    - Bedroom storage

    Many thanks

    Kanoe

Worth it .... if they're good. Kanoe, be VERY wary about selecting on price. There may be good reason why cheap guys are cheap.

On the plus side, unless you're VERY handy yourself, a good one will produce better quality work, especially where it shows, like joints. And be a lot faster than you, too, due to knowing what they're doing, and having the right tools.

Have I? Yeah, but a long time ago. Sufficiently so that I don't remember what it cost and it'd be way out of date if I did.

My advice ... find a suitable guy and then ask for a couple of references, and check them out. You might even get a chance to see some of his (or her, I guess) work.

Re: Has anyone hired a carpenter before?

I've used many, good and not so good, over the years. Done everything from working for me building a house to building a set of cube shelves. I've always taken personal recommendation as my guide, followed by evidence of previous work (a good young chippie should have an album of their work in some format to show you). Also, if you don't know your area too well, go and ask at your local builders merchant as they'll either have a board for trades to put their cards or they'll know the good ones to recommend. Current day rates vary but anything up to £200 is fair for the skills and experience you're looking for.
