Help me find a specific adhesive tape

When a large construction contract is completed, it's not uncommon for things left behind by the various contractors to be thrown in to a skip, including the site office stationary cupboard. I raided such a cupboard on a project I worked on a few years ago before it disappeared in to the 40 yard abyss.

I scored a box of quality self adhesive tape, it didn't have any branding on it and I used the last roll some months ago. Since, I've been trying to find out what kind of tape it was so I could buy some more.

The best way I could describe it; it's gaffer's tape like, but without the fibre/fabric component.

Like gaffer's tape, it has a surface that's easily written on and the adhesive doesn't leave a sticky residue, unlike regular duct tape which leaves a horrible mess. But like both gaffer's tape and duct tape, it's quite strong but yet easy to tear.

Any ideas?

Like masking tape yet stronger?

It has a much stronger adhesive than masking tape and is made of plastic rather than paper.

Sounds like electrical tape to me.

It's thinner than electrical tape but thicker than parcel tape.

I also forgot to mention, it comes in 50mm rolls.

Edit: Maybe not actually, that seems to be a low-adhesive tape for painters to use to get good edges. Still, it'll not leave any residue...

The description certainly matches what you've said above, and it'd be something that would make sense for builders to leave on-site when they'd finished (the cost of materials will have been billed to the customer, I imagine, so no need to recover any unused tapes etc.).

We use low-tac tape at work. It's light grey externally and black on the adhesive side. It's plastic (PVC?) based (stretches somewhat if force is applied), can be ripped past elastic limit if enough force is applied. No residue, no fibre, low tac ( used for wrapping around aluminium stock lengths to brace them together for transporting).
