I'll have my own small garden soon :woowoo:
I want a shed that I can put tools in without them rusting, or being (easily) stolen. I also want a light and sockets in there for light DIY. Budget not set yet, but not looking at the low end. What material? Insulation? Where to buy from? Tell me what you know please?
Most low end sheds are pretty basic, but there is no reason why you can’t add some insulation and run power to it. Security is an issue so a simple alarm system might help. Damp and humidity are the enemy of tools, so either a dehumidifier or a low power heater - especially if you have good insulation.
Floors seem pretty poor, so you might want to improve that on a shed kit, and a good external base - that drains freely - is essential. You could lay a concrete slab with drainage channels in it to prevent surface water accumulating. Pay attention to the roof too, if it’s felt over plywood think about doubling the thickness for longevity. Avoid chipboard if you can, useless if it gets wet.
Or you could build from scratch :)

be careful of planning restrictions though. size is set based on proximity to other buildings, % of garden area taken up, overall height limitations etc. Some places have land convenants that impose other restrictions.
That said, a new shed is great. Provided it is a shed and not a ridiculous barn fitted out as a 2nd mini-house like some I have encountered. We just got delivery of ours, it's only 8ftx8ft but it's great and more spacious than I thought it would be. Painting it is taking a while, but luckily we got the outside coated before the rains came :)
Oh and get tanalised wood. It's not perfect, but a good starting point.
What about a mini shipping container that you can clad?
Weak point will be the padlock then!

certainly does a job :)
I would steer clear of metal, unless you insulate it well it will condensate and become damp, I would go with a traditional wooden shed, insulate it as well as you can and try to get it up off the ground if you can.
