Which wax/oil for wood smells the nicest?

Hello everyone.

I need to wax and / or oil some beautifully grained and well seasoned ash and beech.

What I'm looking for is some good smells :)

There's a wooden cupboard in my kitchen, and at some point some time before I moved in... someone waxed a shelf in it and it smells utterly divine.
It smells so good... It's worth stickng your head in for a good lungfull ;)

But I dunno what it is.

In terms of furniture polish I use a beauty called Woodsilk, which is very wet, very oily and I use it on tables and woodsen surfaces if I can then leave them untouched for a few days. It smells good. But it's not the same smell.

What do I need?

NOT danish oil. It stinks. It really does. Mouldy sweaty cheesy gym socks. Lessens with time, but really not pleasant to begin with. Looks good, but boy the smell each time you coat it (and you'll want ideally 3, with wet sanding)

Linseed oil.

Raw, not boiled. Be careful with rags, etc when applying it, they will catch fire! :crazy:

linseed putty doesnt smell much, but I've not sniffed linseed oil recently... will give it a full inhale ;-)

Blend boiled linseed with beeswax, you'll need to melt the wax first, but it does add an extra sheen that linseed alone with not do. Ive used loads of this recently for my home made turntables on block oak. You *might* want to add a few drops of an essential oil to make it smell of what you want...

Beeswax has a nice smell. Linseed doesn't smell of much really, just faintly "oily."

At the risk of being a smidge less than helpful, isn't a "good smell" rather 'in the nostrils of the besniffer'?

Beyond that, I like g8ina's idea of the oil/wax blend, maybe with lavender essential oil. If you like lavender?

I've never tried it with wood oil/wax, but I have with soap and I can't see why the principle would be any different. Lavender oil should be easy to get, but if you want something different, try sandalwood, or rose oil, or ..... there's hundreds, and "craft" siap suppliers can supply.

Just test on scraps before applying to valuable items.

So ... it really does come down to the besniffer's hooter.


PS. For wood, I just use a pure beeswax polish.

PPS. For expert advice, maybe find a french polishing forum?

Beewax and turpentine.

I can sell you some snake oil... does a great job. :innocent: It's so fine and natural looking you sometimes wonder if it's there at all.

first set of lumps oiled

Linseed and a litle white spirit on the first coat... to help it soak in.

then two more coats of linseed. and it looked beautiful

but once dry smelled of nothing.. fair enough

then I drilled the holes for screw fixings.... :)

Are you going to post pictures? Because we want to see the grain!

no...no you don't

Because it's chainsaw cut and weathered and not super smooth and lush

Danish oil doesn't smell too bad, steer clear of the linseed oil

With any type of oil you will get a smell, cannot say ive come across a pleasant smelling oil, your best bet would be a wax of some kind
