Suggestions on the glue to use to fix plastic garden bin...

Evening all.

I have a plastic garden bin lid that is damaged (there is crack running over quiet a fair length of the lid now) and i would like to repair it.

Looking up some epoxy / glues for plastic a lot of them say they aren't to be used with certain types of plastic; so my question to you is, is there a general epoxy / glue i can use that will just work or if not how do i find out what type of plastic this bin lid is made of and from that what glue i need (recommendations ?)

It might be worth checking out Gorillla Glue. I've seen impressive claims and it's been good when I've used it but ... as it seens you're well aware, glues csn be funny with plastics.

Only two other thoughts cross my mind, one of which is a bit drastic. That one is using a soldering iron to melt tge crack back together. But it might make it worse. Also, be careful of noxious fumes.

The second is .... by bin, do you mean garden refuse bin? If so, call tge council, or better yet, drop in to their bin centre. The people there might know, or might swap it out abd repair/replace the damaged bit. Maybe.

A lot depends on the plastic. ABS is very difficult to glue without industrial solvents that are difficult for the average person to obtain (effectively a chemical weld) Others can be solvent welded (polystyrene for example, and some plastic drain pipes). Some can be glued sigh conventional types of glue (cyanoacrylate, epoxy resins) But the results can be variable.

As Saracen says, some thermoplastic compounds can be heat welded, but depending on the tools you have and your skill, results will again be variable.

ABS can be welded with acetone. Other plastics laugh at acetone. You need to know the precise plastic, specially if you want the end result to have any flexibility.

Or you just epoxy another lump of plastic behind it as a strengthening plate.

Saracen, its not a council provided bin otherwise i would have got onto them.

It looks like it might be ABS but how do you tell ?

There may be something embossed into the base to tell you?
