I'm looking for tips on Grass care please

Hi.

I'm new to the forum and found this section and decided I'd give it a go.

I have a reasonably sized garden in the Yorkshire area of England and I'm looking for some helpful tips on how to keep my grass healthy and green.

I was paying a company to come do this for me, but it ended up worse than before with toadstools and all sorts of nonsense growing.

I have 2 small dogs that pee and poop all over it, but other than that it has minimal footfall and gets cut twice a month.

I'd be super grateful for any advice on products to use or a regime on how to care for it and keep it looking the best it can.

This time of year isn't the best for lawn care given early morning frost etc

Toadstools this time of year is quite normal for healthy lawns. They will go of their own accord in a few weeks so I would just leave them be. Taking a lawn mower or edging mower (the thing with the plastic strip that spins) will just make the patches worse given it wiil spread them and the spores if they are dry.

As for lawn care itself Wilko have a good selection of stuff in. Look for lawn repair and feed, I found the Miracle Gro stuff worked great killing off a huge patch of clover within 2 weeks and the lawn started looking really lush and green. You just spread it evenly over the lawn then water it in. Don't mow the lawn for 7-10 days after doing this so it can get down to the roots.

Dogs peeing on the lawn will create yellow patches so the feed routine can be done a few times a year and helps no end with it (dog owner here also at previous address - got the lawn took out at our new house and had decorative stone fitted for ease)

I would do this early spring next year after the first cut

what on earth is in dog pee that causes the grass to die? I saw that at a house we visited back when we were house hunting and never realised it was an issue before. Presumably there's no way to train the dog to pee in a set location off the lawn instead?

Think it has something to do with the ammonia in the pee that makes the grass have pale yellow patches

You can get a rubberised artificial sheet that is similar to grass that is 4 foot square or so which you could train your dogs to use

Oh damn, maybe I was too quick to blame the lawn care expert in growing shrooms on my garden!

I'll grab some of the lawn repair and feed when I see it in preparation for the spring and get right on it.
