Heated towel rail making strange noises!
The heated towel rail in my bathroom has started making this weird sound every few minutes, when the central heating is on.

I'm wondering if it's air in the system, but I'm no heating/plumbing expert so only guessing. I can't see any kind of bleed valve on the towel rail, but would it be worth me checking if the radiators need bleeding?
Re: Heated towel rail making strange noises!
It's where I'd start. Is the rail warmer at the bottom than the top? That's a big giveaway for air in the system.
Re: Heated towel rail making strange noises!
No I can't say I've noticed the rail (or any rads) being colder at the top. I actually just had a closer look at it, and found it does have a bleed valve after all. Definitely not an air issue though - as soon as I open the valve it starts p*ssing water!
I did find a brand name on the bottom of it (Altech) so might contact the manufacturer and ask their thoughts.
Re: Heated towel rail making strange noises!
Does it have a thermostatic valve on it? Sounds like a dodgy thermostatic valve opening or closing.
Re: Heated towel rail making strange noises!
If it is colder at the top than the bottom then it has air in it. Bleed it.
If it is hotter at the top than the bottom then it has sludge in it, you need it uninstalled, cleaned and reainstalled.
Turn the TRV up and down a few times, it may be stuck if it hasn't moved in monrgs

Thanks guys, yes it looks like it has two TRVs. Both seem to turn OK, but maybe one or both are knackered.
If anything it does feel warmer at the top than bottom too. Time to get a plumber out I think!
