    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

I did something! Not much but the ball is rolling again. I measured, measured again, did some calculations, remeasured and then measured again. After that I cut one of the wall sections mostly straight A lick of primer on the cut edge and that was my lunch break. This was the simple low wall opposite the garage wall - full width panels - one whole one and a cut piece on top. Will need to get some noggins cut before attaching. Will see whether I'm inspired to do that next or to try a slope for an end wall!

    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

Rain has frustratingly stopped play repeatedly this week. Paint bought on Monday from Wilko and I had a good outing on Tuesday evening and got a coat on the two pieces that make up the first wall. And then we've had drizzle, a little bit of rain, and more drizzle. Every time I've tried in an evening or lunch since no luck! The boards themselves are holding up fine out in the rain at least!

So the paint didn't go on super well, assuming water based on oil. I did paint myself into a bit of a corner. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, should have gone with marine ply rather than OSB to simplify but it'll be ok. Needed oil based primer on the OSB otherwise it can swell, nice colours only come in water based. I should have just painted the unseen sides in white oil based rather than the blue I've started with but nevermind! We'll get there in the end.

Another coat hopefully this weekend then need to buy another tin or two, only available in small and they don't go that far! Also running out of excuses not to start cutting some more wood. Need the noggins for the side I've done before I can put it all together and then to get started on the far wall, might flip that order though so I can go straight to putting it together once walls are done. Also need some more long screws to secure it to the wall, I have 6 the right sort of size in my random collection so will measure and pick up a box.

    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

Second coat on at lunch today:

I used a small roller this time which was much better than a (large) brush, and also meant I used a small brush for the edges. All in all a successful hour including prep, clean-up and writing this up Will be able to pick up more paint at the weekend when we're in town. Hopefully can get some chop chop chopping done in the evenings as well.

    Feeling positive!

    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

First (simple) wall all fixed together, noggings went in with only one adjustment on length (I cut generously!) and lots of nails. Even PVA'd the join which I'm sure I read somewhere was a thing.

Just doing some trig now for the end sloping wall as they're quite large and heavy so need to get a move on before I end up with too many things I can't move. I've got (at least some of) Saturday to work on this so need to see if I can cut the OSB and get it painted before hand so I'm not waiting for things to dry too long.

    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

Stupidity stops play this weekend. Well there was a bit of a mix-up in when 'shed time' was as we visited family yesterday for tea so it was going to be yesterday morning and this afternoon, but the morning was shorter than hoped and this afternoon started later. And now has been curtailed due to my stupidity. I had managed to get the far wall paint ODB started in the week and final coat yesterday morning after cutting last weekend. Also got the near 'door wall' bits cut and treated last weekend so they went together yesterday with only a couple of extra pilot holes due to maths failures. So I set off with gusto finally, laid the far wall frame down, plopped on the OSB and started to hammer. Bottom corner in after a few measurements, all good. Up to the end of the piece on the flush side, whack, whack, I'm sure there are meant to be noggins, whack, owww. Carried on, whack, no wait that's pretty sore. Glove off, blood, ugh best stop and clean up. Thumb now in washed an wrapped in ice.

On the up side it looks like I've got a couple of dry evenings to finish it off so it isn't just laying in pieces on the floor. On the down side I'm an idiot who forgot what I was doing, got distracted then hit himself hard. Hopefully the nail will survive! Off to lick my wounds and watch a children's film.

    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

How is the digit? Feel for you! My tip for whacked fingers and toes is to wrap around with micropore tape asap. Leave it on past the initial swell stage. It can help stop the nail being pushed up by the blood blister that wants to form under it. This is much easier than lancing the blister after the event. If you do have to resort to the latter before resorting to the hot needle through the nail see if going in flat under the nail from the tip works. I drained my toe that way and it allowed me to push the nail back down low enough to be able to walk again and without the nasty nail hole.

    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

'Fortunately' it seemed I caught the end rather than square on the nail so we're all still attached. I thought the nail had split but seems to have recovered and just be a bit flatter than it used to, and it's healed enough to stop bleeding every time I do anything. Still throbbing but all things considered I got off lightly for my foolishness. More care will be taken next time.

Rain stopped any action last night (and tbh it might not have been wise!) but hoping I can get out at lunch if it lightens up.

    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

Right, through last week I made some good progress and another silly mistake - this time with the shed rather than a finger at least! Nailing the boards onto the frame I noticed that despite being flush on both sides it wasn't straight on the bottom (there's an overlap so plenty of tolerance for these things). What I thought was "oh I must have cut that side a bit off", what I should have thought was "the frame is no longer square and needs a shove before mailing". All nailed in, then bravely lifted in place - "oh this isn't square". With a couple of washers I got it to pull flush to the side wall and we're about 10mm up at the other end. Screwed in, oh well. Will need a hand to lift the large side wall but might try and get some other bits screwed on first.

    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

Shed update time - blimey it's been a while!

So after a couple of months of being ill and/or busy I've made some more progress last weekend and in a few lunchtimes.

The final roof beams were delivered (got one longer and chopped in half - the advantage of not collecting!) by Bradfords, free delivery which was nice for a single piece of wood! These have now all been cut to size, angled to be fairly flush to the garage wall and notched to sit on the wall/supports. It turns out I'm terrible with a jigsaw! Getting better once I understood what I was doing wrong (kept going left because I'm right handed and was pushing across my body) and my Black Friday purchase of a Makita DJV184Z 18V Brushless Jigsaw is great. All treated and ready to be fitted.

Both sides of the front wall around the door are up (frame only), rough cut done on the wall cladding but still need to do the slope. I might need to do a little adjust on one side, things are out a little bit but should all be within the bounds of wood flexibility...

I'm hoping the weather is dry around new year as we've got family visiting who said they can lend a hand. Not sure I'll get a chance to cut the roof panels before Christmas but will try and sneak out when I can so I as prepared as I can be for the assistance.

Oh and trying to work with the temperature around freezing is tricky, even in the shelter of the garage I could only go for 30 mins at a time before my fingers became useless! One of these days I'll actually get my car parked in the garage - most of the other crud (including inevitable lock down exercise bike that hasn't been touched for years) has been moved on so it's tantalisingly close!

Edit: reading back I've definitely missed an update. The large side wall is now on as well, this is where the 'error' has come in, despite both the sleeper base and bits of the wall being 2.4m full lengths (well some of the horizontals anyway) it's sitting proud 8mm at the near end. Life is full of mysteries!

Haha, or it didn't happen! Away for the weekend but will try and get one on Monday or Tuesday, will start to actually look like something when the roof beams go on!

    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

It's funny, and annoying, how small deviations can creep in. A bit of play in a joint, one miscut angle, even a slightly bowed/warped bit of timber can cause small discrepancies when amplified over several meters of length. You might find a judicious bit of unscrewing, shoving around, and rescrewing in a careful sequence might suffice to get it all true.

    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

As you can probably tell from the leaves, not a new picture. Not much visible progress since, just the part wall on the left at the front as well.

You might find a judicious bit of unscrewing, shoving around, and rescrewing in a careful sequence might suffice to get it all true.
Yeah, will have a go to try and 'correct' some of the issues. The problem I find once something is screwed in is that you either have to use completely new holes or move it far enough so as to not just jump back to the same holes. The cladding will cover up some of the problem, so will just try and pull it back to the right line at the door frame.

You can't see in the picture, but I did end up with a couple of washers on the top support to pull it in tight to the wall due to bowing - the screws themselves would just burrow in rather than pulling any more. I'll need to repeat the trick on the new part wall (not pictured) as this seems to have a particularly twisted piece of wood on one side.

I might try and treat myself to half an hour outside working on it at lunch to do the corrections and maybe add some roof beams, will see how my other jobs go...

Update - new photo added! It looks like a proper thing now!

I did get out at lunch. Got the roof beams lose fitted - still strong enough to hang on though! Had a bit of a tweak of the left side of the door to get it a bit better fitting, still a bit proud but it'll pass with the cladding. Also flipped round the twisted piece of wood and it now sits a lot squarer...

The door gap was 1cm to short (or the piece of wood was 1cm too long) due to a bit of overlap from each side. Trimmed 1cm from the last bit of wood and treated the end for later fitment. Just that and the last roof beam to add it terms of structure, angled cuts, paint and fitting of the cladding, then the roof. So close I can almost taste it

Are you using standard size washers? It's a good idea to use at least over sized penny washers or else 50mm square washers for softwood to help prevent that crushing around the nut and bolt heads, ones that are a few mm thick, not flimsy thin things that just bend

    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

Most screws have just countersink themselves in nicely where they didn't need to do any 'pulling'. Where needed it's 'normal' penny washers that seem up to the job as they don't seem to have bent at all!

    Re: Lean-to Bike Shed

    It's done!

So I had a local handyman over for half a day a few weeks ago which got the roof on and mostly felts, finished off the last bit in the afternoon before it rained:

The Halford finest floor mats look pretty nice in:

This weekend I got the door on after a few lunchtimes / evenings of cutting and painting:

Decorations courtesy of my little boy with some chalk!

Just the one snag at the bottom of the door when opening - might just flatten the floor down a bit as it clear the decking no issues when past. There was also a dash out to get a handle as I realised I potentially wasn't going to be able too pull the door if it was stiff. And the Yale lock was a bit of a faff to fit "backwards" (lots of hacking out wood) but it seems pretty solid and all watertight inside. Bikes are in, just the last few bits to clear/tidy in the garage then the car will be in (after a good wash!).
