So can anyone explain why alcohol free beer and wine are the same price as 'real' beer and wine? I thought there was a tax on the alcohol?
We've got a small baby and I'm getting fed up of squash and diet coke in the evening....

Only guesses, but it could be that the quantities are lower, so supermarkets get less of a deal. Same goes for manufacturing it, it probably costs more per litre. Also there are extra steps in the process to remove the alcohol, so added cost to the manufacturer.
True the alcohol can then be sold on as a different product, but that probably doesn'y make up for the difference at manufacture.
Either that or there is a conspiracy and everyone is ripping you off
no alc is cheaper in wetherspoons, and i know cans of kaliber go for about the same as fosters here.
but really, id just stick to proper soft drinks, non-alcoholic stuff always tasts bad.

Alcohol free wine and beer are usually made in the normal way. And then have the alcohol removed afterwards. So it costs more to make, and there are lower economies of scale. So it won't be as cheap as wine/beer without tax.
The main reason is that pubs charge what the market will bear. Coke etc are charged at extortionate prices compared to the cost to buy. Sugar syrup, flavourings and fizzy water combine to be £1.50 a glass, rather than the 0.30 they could still make a profit on.
Alcohol free drinks are a nice market for pubs. The punter drinking them has no choice but to pay the going rate.

well it always seems that any non-alcolholic drink is nearly as much as a proper drink anyway. Pint of Coke/Pepsi is the same as a cheaper brand of lager. only way to get a cheap non-alcolholic drink is lime and soda (or tap water).
Yeah, but I'm not talking about in a pub. I'm talking about from a supermarket.
Heh, couldn't get leathered with a baby due, and can't get leathered now we have to feed him every 3-4 hours and I'm getting bored of soft drinks.....
Then lemonade on thursday, then coke and lemonade mixed on friday to it look like beer
