    Question Leeks

    How much of a leek should be used?

    Is it the whole stalk but none of the leaves? Or is it OK to peel off the outside leaves and use the continuation of the stalk up beneath the leaves.....or should you just use the whole lot?

    They should print instructions on the side...

    I would chop the bottom off and peel off the outside leaves, I think that's OK

    You can use it all, just cut the root bit and the tips of the leaves off.
    The only problem there may be is that grit can get caught between the layers of the leaves as it grows, so completely cutting off the ends removes this risk. Alternatively, just clean it well.

    It's all edible and tasty.

    Cheers all, next time then we'll have the leaves as well chopping off only the tips and washing thoroughly.

    I think we wasted half our leek tonight

    I tend to wash mine after chopping it up to make sure its fully grit free.

    If you split one along almost it's whole length, but leave the roots-bit whole, you can then easily wash the grit out by holding it upside down under a running tap and scrubbing under the leaves with your fingers. Then just trim the tatty ends of the leaves and slice 'em up.

    Our weekly veg box has gone a bit Leek mad recently, we've had two or three each week for a while now. I've been making lots of creamy ckicken soup, but I'll definately give the salmon a try. (Thanks Oid and Colossous)

    Yeah I've been getting quite a bit of leek in mine too
