    Veg Boxes: Who has one?

I'm seeing a rather good vegetable trend happening here in Hexus Hotpot

Who has a Veg Box delivered weekly, and is it Organic or standards, (I'm not quite as pro organic as I was last year....) or simply local produce only (that's where I'm coming from more n more) and is it Supermarket, or online supplier (Abel and Cole or Riverford for exampe) or local fam co op?

I'm interested..and proud of you all for trying it

I'm an Abel and Cole man ....3+ years now

My mum gets one from time to time. It's all local produce, not sure about organic though.

I would get one, but i'm never at home to use it. Also i usually cook for one which is useless when it comes to using things like this

Didn't know you got them Zak ?

I started on the river nene ones at the beginning of the year - I get a mini box every fortnight and it does me pretty well

my reasons for getting them are that I'd like to try and support local (ish) produce and that it forces me to use a nice variety of veg.

I'm not fussed about the organicness of it , although I must admit it does taste nice.

It is any cheaper than getting them from the supermarket ?

possibly not , but if you factor in the fuel for me to get there and the time and the fact I'd be likely to spend money on other less necessary things , then I think it works out quite cost effective.

I'd like to try one that was even more local as I woudl like to support local producers. I've already found some very good butchers near by ( sadly they dont do meat boxes ) and nice though they are , they are a bit expensive.

We get a medium Abel and Cole box each week and it is superb. Makes you think when you get something you have never cooked before. Also the quality is great. I forgot that potatoes actually taste good!

I live in a small village surrounded by farms, so prettymuch all our fruit, veg & meat is locally produced within a mile or two of the house. Much, much cheaper too. A pocket of loose change buys the family's fruit & veg for the week. And it's all organic. Currently living off asparagus from the farm over the road, £1 for 12 spears.

Local venison & dry cure bacon is awesome!

And I use the dogs to hunt rabbit & duck.

Had a river nene veg box for a while, but we always seemed to get at least one thing each week we didn't like (and we always got far too many potatoes).

In the end I found a farm shop on the way home from work (which also does veg boxes on the side).
Much more flexible, and generally works out cheaper too.

As some people above I'm less fussed about the organic side of things, more interested in getting local stuff.

We buy one from a farm about 2 miles away about once a month. Usually the stuff is pretty good, though it's non-organic (afaik)

Well I think you're all thinking along the right lines and should be congratulated.

Organic is important, but not as vital to me as it used to be. Some of Abel and Coles Organic stuff is from quite a distance, though none is airfreighted, it's still done some serious food miles.

I get a fair few Kiwi's in my veg box but I dont think you can have too many potatoes. I'm always a tad short of those. Onions are good to get in bulk too, and last well.

I'm quite impressed by how many of you are thinking similarly to us

Not that we're 'right' cos there are better ways I'm sure.

But the definition of Local Produce came up in conversation with some of our non-Hexus friends recently and as they're all in the food industry......

    I probed.

Local Vegetable "A" grown in Yorkshire and sold within 50 mile radius of grower, was actually driven 300 mile round trip to be washed and packaged.

It was grown and sold on the doorstep...but went to Scotland to be rinsed and bagged.

And it's this kind of thing that the public don't know about.
