    The Malbec Grape

    Hi people,

Anyone know much about the Malbec grape? I have just aquired a bottle of this from Majestic
    http://www.majestic.co.uk/webapp/wcs...roductId=30701

It's £3.99 and is so light, and fresh it's a real shocker! It's proper red, but it has the qualities of a fruit juice! Refreshing, clean tasting, not sweet exactly, but no acidity at all.

It's not like a Rose, but it is......and by that I mean it's easily quaffable but not where near (and I mean miles off) a white.

I can't imagine cooking a sunday roast and serving this, BUT I CAN imagine making a fruit pudding of somesort and soaking the fruit in it.

    It's Summer in a bottle

Anyone tried Malbec before? It must be that grapes influence, because the main grape is Shiraz (Syrah by the other name) and it's notihng like that bar it's deep colour (though it's as though its been diluted in colour)

    I'm running out of words....HELP

I used to work with someone in Oz who had their own vineyard.

He told me (1997) Malbec was a bit sweeter than other varieties, thus had a little higher alcohol % and was sometimes used in blends to raise the overall % in the bottle.

Have seen it being used in more blends in recent years and I've had some very nice ones, with the qualities you mention

Frequently have Malbec. Staple of Argentina my current "bang for buck" wines.

It's always worth trying different grapes. I can get fed up of Cabanet, Chadonney, Sauvingnon, Shiraz, Merlot. Also try Carmenere, Pinotage, Colombard...

Wow...just found this site....there are hundreds of grapes...why do we only get a few?

Malbec grape is a thin skined grape which requires more sun than your avaerage eg : Cab Sav or Merlot.

So is grow in the hotter regions such as Argentina, usually Malbecs are mixed with other grapes rather than used on their own. Originated in Bordeaux but hardly used now hence most Malbecs are from Argentine now :-)

Oooh, if Zakky is reccommending it, might have to go visit (Gasp!) a wine shop to try it.

I'll have a look out when I'm in Bordeaux for it too... might still be some smaller vinyards still growing it.
