just been given a live salad...

well what a nice birthday i had, right up until the meal we decided to go out for at the last minute..

I am a fussy eater, and i do expect a near perfect dinner when i go out and hand over hard earned money for someone else to cook me dinner.

So off we went to the award winning Indian down the road, it was full. So off we go in search of a food. I end up a few miles away at a pub thats had a recent new owner, extension and renovation. advertising there nice menu etc, in we go, not may there so we get a table and order starters and main.

so far so good, were almost drooling over the deserts in view across the room, waiting for our starters, we don't wait long, no more than 10 mins.

out come my duck spring rolls, and the wifes potato skins, both presented on a bed of lettuce. Great i think as i tuck into a roll, then another, then i take a fork full of lettuce, i did note how bloody dry it tasted, so i eat another spring roll. Then i take another fork full of lettuce, just as i swallow I'm stabbing at another bit of lettuce and notice some dark dots with what looks like hairs.. soon my brain tells me they may be legs so i go in for a closer look.. In absolute horror i look up and stop the wife from eating, i then pass her said piece and ask her opinion, she confirms they look like dead insects..

At this point i want to throw up right there and then on the table, have i eaten a mouth full of bugs or not? My belly is not sure.. i call the waiter over and say, "look m8 I'm halfway through this and i can now see plain as day this is not washed and is f**king covered in bugs..as i go to point at the bugs i see to my utter horror a maggot of some form extending its white body with black head across the leaf

waiter takes a look in horror and runs off with both starters, totally unlike myself i have not kicked off in an almighty paddy and emptied the place, I'm to bloody shell shocked to react in my normal way. Waiter comes rushing back to say there off the bill and would we like fresh?

i just look at him and say after that, forget the food were leaving. he nodded and said his sorry's and we were off out the door.

After that what would you do ?

call health and safety or what.. dunno what i should do

Do it, most local councils have extremely efficient environmental health departments now.... Just think, what else could you or anyone else have eaten in there?

have you ate there previously and how was it?

I worked in the catering industry for years and the only reason I ask is it would be a little harsh if they have a good reputation as things like this can happen and be over looked it probably was not put there purposely and if you do report it all they will do is evaluate them to see if they take measures to provent this happenign again. If the restaurant has a rep for this by all means report it otherwise I would take it as being unlucky.

so it would be harsh to report it, and yet all that would happen is an evaluation?

What I was saying is people make mistakes i asked if this is a regular occurance at this restaurant for a reason. If the health inspector went to the unit to investigate if he thought there was adequate precations to prevent this happening then he would have no option but to give verbal advice. If he found there was reason then he would issue a notice to get this sorted and make a revisit. If again no action was taken then he can then lay down the law. My friend is an environment heath officer.

lmao no way eating a maggot makes you ill, you have seen them on the telly ray mears ect they eat that **** all the time.

YES it should have been washed no doubt, but stop crying.. report them is a bit harsh, i have seen much worse things.

Think, you have just wasted a day of your life giving a damn about something so petty in the grand scale.

Just dont go there again and roll on..

So glad i wasn.t eating my dinner when i read this thread. Myself i would report it, if it was a genuine mistake then i dont expect anything drastic will happen to them , but if their hygene is not up to standard then its needs sorting. I wouldnt sit down to a plate of food like that at home , so i definately wouldnt expect too while out !

well the mrs and me think we are fussy eaters.. in all reality we only expect 3 things..

1, to be served within 30 mins, or if not a staff member should inform us in advance if they know there busy, or should come out and inform you theres a delay, even say chef burnt your steak, he is redoing both meals to come out together, would you like a free drink..

2, to be presented with a plate of food that looks good enough to eat, ie dont bring me burnt food, its not my problem you overcooked it, dont expect me to make do.

3, health and safety, I hate dirty plates, and dirty knifes and forks, it only takes a second to wipe off the plate, knife fork & spoons as there being placed on the table., and there is no excue whatsoever to put unwashed food on the plate, if you want to eat pesticides and insects arbitor, its fine by me, but my brain tells me its wrong, and if i want to eat live bugs i will apply to be shipped off to australia on some TV show where i will willingly eat bugs..

we have nearly found fault with all my local resturants, and each time they fubar, we never return. I have never gone further than moaning to the chef or manager as i expect the odd mistake, but if they try to pass it off on me in the 1st place why should i go back. We did think we were fussy at one stage, but is there any excuse to bring out cremated garlic bread ? for the 2 mins it would take to butter some more and throw it under the grille? not in my book when there taking a fiver off you for that 30p of bread, garlic and butter ! I am not fussy, i just dont like bending over.

but last night went a worm to far, fair do a maggots not going to kill me, or cause a belly ache, neithers the small hairy things that had snuffed it, chance is there dead due to pesticides, hence why it should be washed !

I'm sure the thought of eating anything like that would make me feel sick - let alone consuming it.
