    step 1: go buy some bulk spices from a halal meat center. £20 will give you more than you could ever wish to use. 1Kg bags of Excta Hot Chili Powder really help to add zing to student cooking

    step 2: get some staple foods you can rely on as a student. bags of pasta & rice are key, also investigate tortillas

    step 3: analyse what you can do for veg intake. I use a lot of chopped tomato in my cooking, and pour liberally from a handy bag of sliced frozen peppers

    step 4: analyse what you can do for protein intake. Personally I find Asda's Smartprice Turkey Steaks (700g for £2.88) to be fairly lean & not at all bad pieces of meat, and Turkey's very good for you in terms of fat intake etc. 1 pack will last me 3 days, so I buy 3 packs & freeze 2.

    Right. With that out of the way, here's a recipie suggestion that has served me well:

    * About 250g of thinkly sliced or diced meat
    * Some spices
    * 1 tin chopped tomatos
    * 1 tin refried beans (small or large, doesn't matter)
    * mighty Lea & Perrins - works with everything
    * frozen peppers
    * rice
    * tortillas
    * cheese if you're feeling adventurous

    Get a tupperware container big enough to store the meat (I do 3 days worth at a time, it's easier that way). pour in a layer of an acid base of some sort. feel free to experiment here. I've used wine, grapefruit juice, and coca cola in the past.

    Sprinke in a healthy dose of spices of your choice (e.g. oregano, basil, sage & rosemary - or cumin, chilli powder, paprika, garam masala. experiment!), mix around, then add the meat & slosh the container about so all the meat is covered.

    In a saucepan, put in the chopped tomatos, the refied beans, the peppers, and some spices which are in keeping with the marinade you used. Also, give a healthy dose of lea & perrins. Heat up & allow to reduce. You want this to be pretty thick.

    Take a bigger saucepan, put in 1 large mug of rice, stir in some turmeric, then 2 large mugs of water. Boil until all the water's gone

    Meanwhile, fry the meat & add to the sauce. When the sauce looks nice & reduced, add to the rice to make a big meaty ricy saucy mixture that should be fairly thick.

    Open a tortilla, add a healthy spoon of goo, sprinkle grated cheese on top, and fold. repeat until you run out of tortillas - and eat the leftovers with a spoon.

    Should make 10 easily, and 2 or 3 is enough for 1 meal for a normal person \o/

    beans on toast, or my personal fav - get 2 large potatoes, pierce, stick on a large plate in a microwave for 5 mins. then empty a tin of beans onto the plate and microwave for 2 minute. slice the potatoes in half, grate cheese over the top of everything and mwave for a further minute. eat. equipment used - 1 knife, 1 fork, 1 plate, a microwave - has protine, vitimins, the works, and involves no washing up! smashin

    Pasta aglio e olio is a great one I find.

    Boil pasta until al-dente then drain and throw into a pan with some extra virgin olive oil and lots of chopped garlic, how finely you chop it and how much you use is up to you.
    Toss the pasta in the garlic and oil, not really frying it just warming it with the mixture.
    Put it on a plate then sprinkle very liberally with Fresh black pepper and LOTS of fresh parmesan. Very easy to make and cheap.

    get yourself a george forman grill (i know you said workspace is limited..), but its worth it.

    bag of 30 frozen sausagees from tesco ~£2.50!, then make sausage sanguages, and whack a hard fried egg on top of the sausages, with ketchup, yummy

    also, buy one get one free bags of chicken dippers -24 per pack now, 24 makes a good meal (albeit quanitiy not quality), with cheese + bbq sauce.

    pasta bakes are awesome (tesco own brand is the same as bachelors basically..)

    omlette, sliced up (or get pre sliced as already suggested ) peppers, with bacon in the omlette are super sweet.

    spaghetti bolagnese (spelling?), get 250grams per person of meat (i ithnk its 250. can't eremebr) fry it until its all brown, drain off excess fat, add Dolmio sauce, with extra chopped up unions. let it simmer until its piping hot, whilst boiling pasta to go with it.

    cheese and tomato spaghetti, my grandads recipe, and its a treat.

    1 tin chopped tomatoes
    too much spaghetti to eat
    small handful grated cheddar cheese (preferably mature)
    half an oxo cube
    squirt of tomato puree
    dash of lea and perrins

    easily done in 1 pan:

    cook spaghettl
    drain and leave on side
    return pan to heat and add tomatoes and tomato puree to pan
    crumble oxo in and allow to simmer for a few minutes, stirring with the dirty fork you used to test the pasta with
    add cheese, lea and perrins, mix quickly and add spaghetti to pan.
    remove from heat, stir thoroughly, and serve with black pepper to taste

    tasty meal, and uses ingrediants that are almost always just lying around

    My favourite meal as a sudent was:

    1/2lb-1lb of mince (get the el cheapo, not extra lean, it's tastier), fried up with a teaspoon of mixed herbs and a good dash of encona hot sauce, and served in a couple of toasted pitta breads with grated cheddar, and shredded lettuce when I could be bothered. The whole meal costs less than a pound, takes 10 minutes and is delicious! Quicker, cheaper and better than tacos or fajitas if you ask me. You could add an onion too, I preferred it without.

    why not...

    buy...
    1x Large Cool Original Flavour Doritos
    1x Stilton Cheese
    1x Big bar of white chocolate
    (and a grill)

    we begin by filling a big bowl with the doritos (making sure that the bowl is heat resistant).

    next, grate the chocolate so that the chocolate covers the doritos at the top evenly, then do the same with the stilton, but be sure not put too much.

    Now grill under a low heat until the chocolate and cheese has melted !!BUT NOT BROWNED!!

    then scoff...

    i forgot to mention that i haven't actually made this myself so you're my guinea pig and i'd imagine that getting the right balance of cheese and chocolate will take some trial and error.

    pasta + green pesto

    then add whatever you have around of the following:

    cheese
    tuna
    bacon
    sausages
    mushrooms
    eggs
    fishfingers (bout 60p a pack - cheaper than bacon or sausages and make good sarnies)
    frankfurters

    these are my favs but practically any lump of tasty food can get chucked in.

    I was just about to suggest pesto - there's also other types as well as green. Pasta +pesto very quick and easy and you can add anything to it.

    spag bol is also fairly easy to make and once the summer comes (and salad stuff gets cheaper) salads are really easy - cut a load of veggies up and throw on your plate; then have virtually anything with it, tuna, chicken, sausages...........
