    Egremont Russet

..are a type of English apple I'd never heard of before.

I got to try some as part of a Sainsburys taste festival thingy, where they were actually sampling some cheese. The cheese was nothing to write home about, but the apple they served it with was stunning. Firm flesh, lovely sweet taste yet also full of flavour.

They look really weird - have a kind of brown furry skin, but don't let that put you off! In season now

Could be - they can look a bit like a spud I guess. Did it have a leathery thick skin? The one I ate just now didn't have an acidic aftertaste at all though - that's one of the reasons I like them - they're as strong tasting as a granny smith, but without the acidity, and with the sweetness of a cox as well.
