    Horticulture

Any keen HeXus gardeners out there? Who grows their own fruit & veg?

I know Moby's a keen Chilli grower as am I, year 2 of the great chilli grow-a-thon!

Plus I've got some different verieties of tomato's (white, orange & black), as well as red (samuri) carrots & purple potato's for the kids, strawberries & gooseberries.

    Re: Horticulture

I've not really progressed to other vegetables - but I really must stop watching Jamie at home - its giving me thoughts of veg patches

I'm trying to grow a few herbs on the windowsill as well.

    Re: Horticulture

My herb garden's been going the longest. Dill, marjoram, sage (3 verieties), oregano, thyme, mint (ginger, apple, spear & pepper), borage, bay, lemon verbena, fenugreek, parsley (flat & curled), fennel, lemon balm, coriander (keep it wet to stop it seeding), chervil, chives, garlic chives, garlic, etc.

Whenever i use a bulb of garlic, I always plant at least one clove, get enough to last you all year round that way. Plus they taste good young & green (when they're spring onion size) in salads.

    Re: Horticulture

Grew my own beetroot, beans, onions, shallots, leeks last year. Tried sweetcorn without success (blaming the wet and nasty summer for that one). Have 4 raised beds and and a squash patch all dug over and ready for this years efforts. Am also devoting a corner of my patch to a cutting garden, coz I like fresh flowers in the house. Never grown own cutting flowers before so most excited about this venture.

Dakky is the fruit enthusiast, I bought him a Quince tree for his birthday this week so looking forward to Apple and Quince crumbles in the autumn and Quince paste and chutnies

    Re: Horticulture

I'm trying to grow things this year... that's if my 'rents have remembered to water my seedlings! (they're residing in their porch at the moment, until the weather can decide what it's doing frost wise)

I've got a couple of troughs of salad leaves of mixed varieties, 2 hanging baskets that have strawberries and tomatoes and another couple of boxes with herbs.

I've got some cucmbers that I'll set up in a grow bag at some point, but run out of time!

Will also turf out my dead tree and plant some potatoes instead.

    Re: Horticulture

I'm on a roll from last year

Mrs D gave me a load of onion sets which have all been in for a month now, and are popping up strong growth

2 Garlic cloves are in, so we'll see on that front.

The radish seeds I harvested last year are popping up

So are the salad leaves. If there is ONE thing everyone should have a go at, it's a spicy lettuce mix. I had a good patch last year, they only grow small, you pick fresh leaves and wander back to the kitchen to rinse for a salad. They just keep growing. Not pretty, or tidy, and no huge green lettuce crowns like you get in the shops...just lots of different mixed up spice peppery leaves. Plenty of rocket and mizuna ansd stuff.

I've got a second rpsemary now,cos I used so much last yearm, including on the embers of the BBQ to smoke the meat with.

I love this art of spring...so much to do.

AND.....I got two fruit trees on a shopping channel last week, a peach ad a cherry, which should arive this week. Dak told me my sunny wall needed fruit, so these two small root stock will be going in when they arive, and fingers will be crossed

    Re: Horticulture

I think it's worth mentioning how little space this all takes.

My herb n salad patch it 4 foot wide by 11 foot long. I have a strawberry plant in there to from ast year, that went very well and so I should get a few bowls from that too

All in a tidy little area. Sorted. I've been digging in the ash from my fire, and it's dne wonders to the soil condition. Wonders.

Also, cos I got a shredder (Bosch) last year, which I use n the light growth that I trim from the bushes, that all got dug into the soil and it's amazing what a difference it made

Haven't brought a bag of soil or compost for 2 years now, and with the composter in the corner with kitcen veg scraps in, i'll be digging in fresh compost by autumn too

    Re: Horticulture

    Anyone else have an allotment?

Dak and I have been allotmenting for the past five years and when we started we took loads of ribbing for being such old fogeys, but it seems to be growing loads more popular with younger people taking on plots now.

We grow our toms at home to try and minimise the blight risk, tho last year lost the whole crop to it

    Re: Horticulture

Unfortunately there are no allotment facilities in the village or surrounding areas
Toms did well last year, but the chilli's in the greenhouse all got wormed.
