Cheap meal: corned beef hash. Some friends of mine eat it regularly. Think about all that's in it is tin corned beef, potatoes, beans, onion, wustersauce (sp), surely that's less than 2 quid for 2 portions... ?

I've just invented a new thing for studenty types
Tiggerais Posh Cheese on toast:
Ingredients:
Bit of cheddar
Bit of Jarlsberg / emmental
Slices of ham
Onion (half or so) Diced
mix all together in a bowl, which will keep for a few days... Quick and easy lunches for when you've only got 40 mins between lectures (like me)
Bung spoonful on piece of toast under grill
Plonk on top of jacket potato
add into omlette ( i can't spell it coz i don't like omlette)
Cook some pasta and stir through...
Can't beat stoodents for coming up with budget grub!
Another one is to buy a medium sized whole chicken, when they're on offer, roast it up and use it hot for dinner, then cold for sarnies, pasta, stir fries, salads, etc etc. You've got three days use on it once its cooked.
ps. Tigg, love the avatar tagline!
woah, this one came out from the dead
might try that meatloaf.. what should I have it with?
hughlunnon@yahoo.com | I have sigs turned off..
If you wanna run on a budget, I give you pasta! The superstore that begins and ends with the letter "a" always have bags of about a ton for a quid of pasta on the bottom shelf. You can add anything to pasta and it generally tastes acceptable.
Job done...
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!

Chilli Con Carne (for two)
Requirements:
1/2 pound mince (preferably reduced )
1/2 tin chopped tomatoes (14p/tin @ tesco)
1/2 Onion
1/2 Tin Kidney Beans (17p/tin @ tesco)
2 mugs of rice
Salt
Pepper
Chilli Powder / West Indian Hot Pepper Sauce (the best £1.50 you'll ever spend)
Paprika
Cumin
Garlic salt / Lazy Garlic / Fresh Garlic
Note: The last few items can be bought cheap from your local multi-cultural mini-market as they usually have spices galore for peanuts. Buy in bags, NOT pots as you'll save a fortune!
Preparation Time:
30 minutes
Step-by-step
1.) Brown the mince in a saucepan (dry-fry)
2.) Add chopped onions (as fine as you like them)
3.) Fry for 5 minutes
4.) Add spices, chopped tomatos and kidney beans
5.) Simmer for 15 minutes
6.) Bring the rice to the boil STARTING WITH COLD WATER
Note: If using cheap tesco rice, rinse it through at least twice before using
to stop the rice going stodgy
7.) Leave the rice boiling for approx 10 mins
8.) Serve and enjoy
Approx inital cost (spices): £3.50
This includes the hot pepper sauce etc
Future cost (per meal for 2): < £2

Out of all of these, i must say that Vaul's excellent recipe for beans on toast got my vote.
But wheres the cheese on toast?
right now for my recipe.
/drumroll
A BACON SARNIE!
Honestly, i'd have thought someone would have mentioned this...
Ingredients:
Bacon (really cheap)
Sarnie (aka 2 slices of bread (the extremely exotic stuff vaul mentioned))
HP Sauce
Steps:
1
Heat bacon until hot and crispy (crispiness depends on how you like it).
2
Dribble sauce in between the two halves of the sarnie, then stick the bacon in there as well.
3
Put the two halves together.
4
Eat
5
Enjoy

3. Stop eating Rice Crispies straight from the box - STUDENT!
Its a shame you can't eat episodes of Countdown really, isn't it?
Students and bin robbers... where next?
Anyone got a good recipe for illegally killed park squirrel?
Also, does anyone know how to keep Rave out of my bins? I've tried a 'Keep Out Of My Bins' sign, and he continues. I reckon I'll have to start coating them with a mixture of beans and egg... (I know his weakness... that's like Kryptonite to him)
