    Ghee

Where do supermarkets normally keep this?

I looked in Saisbury's and Asda last night and couldn't find it. Annoying.

Going to have to go to Tesco on the way home tonight now, I'm pretty sure I've seen it in one of their world food isles before.

I was surprised that Asda had a slightly better selection of spices though, Sainsbury's didn't have mustard seeds.

Also, is ghee another name for clarified butter, or is that just a similar product that would do instead?

Yup - it's clarified butter. Usually in the asian/world food sections as you state. Asian supermarkets are probably a good place to look too. Or you could make your own from normal butter if you've got the patience.

Any good Indian shop is bound to have some, try there if you fail at Tescos and the like.

    Re: Ghee

To be honest, I have no idea where there would be a proper Indian store in Aberdeen.

I know we have a large Chinese supermarket, but not Indian.

Might just need to use butter if i can't find it in Tesco, although, our Tesco is pretty good now they extended it, far bigger than any of the other supermarkets.

Just ask your Indian neighbours. There's bound to be one street in your local area packed with Indian shops selling all sorts of Indian stuff.

    That may also prove difficult.

I have actually just remembered about one store that used to do all kinds of spices and even halal meat. Don't know if it still exists though. Might need to go for an explore.

Will be in the Asian section. It won't be in a chiller cabinet as it only needs be be chilled/frozen once opened. Don't use butter to replace Ghee in any recipe. Its not the same thing and results will be different. If you do replace use a vegatable oil, but most recipes should advise you on a replacement.

Just a warning, Ghee is extremely high in cholestrol. Not healthy at all. Hence the oil alternative.

If you go down the DIY route, make sure you buy un-salted butter

    Re: Ghee

It is usually in tins (like the ones you find teacle and golden syrup in) somewhere in either the asian foods isle or in the 'special' foods section- the one where they have the posh stuff in sainsburys. However, unless the recipe really does need the ghee, use oil as has been recommended.

    Re: Ghee

Well I couldn't find it. Ended up being really pissed off at Tesco. They have a million and one other weird things, but not this. I don't think it's that strange a thing to buy. My mum used to always have a block in the fridge.

I wouldn't be worried about my arteries, it was only 50g in the recipe and it's not like I'm eating that every day.
