    The chilli thread

As I understand it a few members on here grow chillis myself included.

What are your favourite types? What do you use with what food? Are you a fan of a little bit of heat or full on going red as a tomato, sweat pouring off you, crying like a little girl heat?

Also what are you growing (if it isnt too off topic for this forum)?

    Re: The chilli thread

I used to be a fan of super hot ones , and grew my own Jolokia's which where emotional to say the least - sadly my body had other ideas and following a few months of serious acid refulx I've had to knock the seriously hot ones on the head a bit. However I am looking at the more flavoursome fruits now , and would love to try and make some chipotles.

Arrival of a baby this year has meant I did grow any this year but I might grow some more next year !

got all my seeds from http://www.nickys-nursery.co.uk/ - a great variety available !

I get mine from http://www.readytogrow.co.uk/, with my faves being the Hot Lemon & Hungarian Hotwax. Heat-wise, I like the Scotch Bonnet for it's initial fruity hit before the heat builds. For cooking the Pepperoncini is a versatile chilli, nice for anything Arrabiata.

    Re: The chilli thread

Habeneros, habeneros, habeneros and a few scotch bonnets for those winter stews and curries.

Seriously though habeneros have the best flavour.

Growing a few habeneros; my crop failed so a kind soul gave me one of thier plants. Hot stuff and jalepenos is teh only other thing I have.

We try and put an order in for mexcican prepared and dried chilli each year (can't remember the company) which are great for chilli.

    Hows the Flu btw?

I have dorset nagas and a 7-pot growing which are the only superhots I have grown this year.

My 7-pot is a bit of a beast though I had to cut it down quite a lot but here it is as of yesterday.

Sorry to hear about your acid reflux issues. congrats on the baby just make sure he/she doesnt get their hands on any hot chillis!

Dont know if you know of this site but http://www.thechileman.org/search.php is great for finding varietys that suit you. for example you might search for chinense but low heat for the flavour but not hot.

I grew HHW last year but wasnt too impressed with it to be honest it makes a good salad chilli but i like a little more fire. Scotch bonnets are good and I'm growing some but i still think habs are better. I have some olive oil with pepperoncini in and that is very nice great for cooking with. I have been meaning to try hot lemon

Yeah I agree habs do have a great flavour to them. I've got 2 orange hab plants this year and will probably get some others, I hear peach habeneros have a really good taste. I dont tend to use much chilli powder but if I do then I usually buy asian ones from one of the big supermarkets. The world food sections are brilliant for dried chillis/powder. You can either buy a little jar of schwartz or similar for £1.40 or for £2 you can often buy 500g or even a kilo.

Tesco has good chillis in the summer months, dorsets, poblano, scotch bonnets, birdseye, cherrybomb etc...

The flu is about the same today perhaps a little better I'm at my pc now rather than in bed with the laptop still got a major fever though. Thanks for asking.

    Re: The chilli thread

I have grown white & chocolate Habonero's this year & I prefer the white. Mushroom chilli's hardly cropped at all despite my best efforts Ancho & Peblano always do well as do the Hyngarian & Czech Blacks (also good salad chilli's)

Hotwax are mild & I do use them primarily in salads or on the BBQ where they excel

    Re: The chilli thread

    Interesting reading guys.

I got a couple of packs of Chilli seeds from a Mexican restaurant in London a a while back (packs in the form of match books, individual tare out sticks). Not got round to planting them yet though, I think they would require more looking after than I can give them (work offshore so am away for extended periods of time).

Oh and no_numb, very cute dog you have!

    Re: The chilli thread

True, they do take some TLC, especially germination and polonisation (if you grow in a greenhouse). Why I grow two main verieties, that is European ones for outside in the garden & the exotics for the greenhouse.

Currently looking at http://www.chileseeds.co.uk/hot_chili_pepper_seed.htm as they have a mega diversity of seeds

All my habeneros come out red or orange.

Some great names coming out which I really should try; never heard of Peblano, hotwax jolokias to name a few.

The dorset nagas sound like those super chilils people are growing and could prove a little dangerous for my delicate disposition.

used in a very dilute way that do have a wonderfull smokey flavour , but they have a very long lasting heat.

if you imagine a graph of hottness vs time , the scotch bonnet is a real "spike" of a chilli - very intense heat , but fades quite quickly. the naga doesn't start that hot , but gets hotter and hotter and hotter , then stays hot

    Re: The chilli thread

They do take some tlc to start but I find they are pretty resiliant. I have had some plants completely drooping and looking dead due to lack of water but then a couple of hours and a good water later they are fine. Its worse to overwater than under water imo. They can go outside after the last frost but do better inside or in a greenhouse. The plant in the pics was planted october last year and kept indoors all its life.

Thanks for the comments I had to chop off about 4ft or so or various branches so I could transport it.

Its got about 4 pods on it developing

Dont the pods just look evil?

Agree with this but IMO and experience the 7-pot is hotter than the dorset, I hear trinidad scorpian is about the same as well and I will be growing this next season. Could just be variation between plants/pods of the same variety but my 7-pot is definately hotter than the dorsets I've tried. (But dorset naga's are still officially the hottest)

    Re: The chilli thread

    Wow they look great plants!!

I tried some indoors this year and they are growing nicely but the flowers keep dropping off - any ideas, Ive tried an occasional spray mist after seeing the climate at the Eden project in the tropical zone?

They are mainly birdseye and some other from India (one of our contractors gave them to me - said they were very small and very hot).

    Re: The chilli thread

Was in the works trials greenhouse last week (I work for a seed company) and there were so many chillis....perhaps I'll pay another visit and take some piccies and notes from the trials book. Didn't taste any though as my mouth was still on fire from the American Land Cress I had just chewed
