    Re: Rice cookers ?

Zojirushi are (were?) the Daddies of the rice cooker market.

Amazon sell them too, go go go!

On a timer or by some magic process of rice inspection?

    Re: Rice cookers ?

Can't say I have much of a problem cooking rice - main thing to do is not to overcook it. Do they just cut out on a timer or do they detect when the water is gone / low?

    Re: Rice cookers ?

    'tis a black art....

I'm not sure how it all works but it's the simplest way of making rice. Slap it in, add water, turn on, forget. Anyhow minor correction, my little rice cooker is Panasonic not National. My family uses both makes and don't have problems cooking rice with either.

    Re: Rice cookers ?

once the water boils away (into the rice and some through the vent) the tempreture rises very fast throwing the trip and putting it into warm mode.

Thanks - was wondering how it worked (have read the wiki page on it now too...).

They are the same company, but AFAIK, newer products are now branded under 'Panasonic'.

    Re: Rice cookers ?

I use something a bit like this - http://tinyurl.com/yaqjq3b (minus the spoon/ladle thing and mug, bought from kleeneze). Basically it's a plastic tub in which a second one stands (on short legs). You bung the rice in the inner tub pour boiling water over the rice (doesn't seem to matter how much water as long as it won't boil dry), slap the top on and stick it in the microwave for exactly twenty minutes (any more/any less and it goes crunchy ). Perfect rice every time, it's soft, non sticky (depending on the type/quality of rice you buy) and no starchy taste (I also occasionally add a vegetable stock cube to give the rice a little extra flavour).

    Re: Rice cookers ?

boiling water enough to cover the rice, tupperware bowl with hole in it to let the air go - microwave full power 10 mins or so. A thing just to cook rice seems about the most pointless thing you could have in the kitchen Same works for steaming vegetables including potatoes, just you only put a tablespoon or two or so of water in instead.

    Re: Rice cookers ?

Seriously though, what's the point? It seems to be just a kind of poser thing for japanese-wannabes (annoying people.) to have in their kitchen as another piece of brightly coloured plastic I haven't tried one but covering it with water etc makes it sound like it'd cook pretty similar to the way I mentioned, if a little slower (someone said 15 mins, plus messing around with the preparation mentioned)?

    Re: Rice cookers ?

i have a cheap ass £10 argos special thats worked great until the none stick layers come off, there no poser type japanese wannabes in my kitchen even if i do have some very expensive equipment in it.

at the end of the day im crap at keeping my eye on the rice and prefer to be sat in the front room watching tv while i use the rice cooker as my curry simmer timer.

if i did fancy adding to my collection of gadgets then im sure i wouldn't think twice about throwing a few hundred quid at this, but thats relaly taking the pee http://www.zojirushi.com/ourproducts...rs/np_htc.html
