I want to eat a horse steak...
I dont buy food in my house, my parents do... but i have a hankering, or call it curiosity about what a horse steak would taste like...
as i understand it, its not a very common thing to get hold of in this country... does anyone know where i might be able to obtain some? and does anyone know how is best to cook said meat?
Re: I want to eat a horse steak...
Haven't had it in England but I have had it in France and it was lovely. From what I remember it was cooked much the same as a beef steak would be.
I have also had it in an oil fondant, which was yummy as well!
Google will be your best bet for cooking instructions.
Re: I want to eat a horse steak...
Seared in a griddle pan, a very nice sweet meat.
Not sure you can get it here. A weekend in Brussels or Bruge? Make sure you go in a month with R in the name as mussels should be available.

Horse meat's not illegal in the UK if I remember rightly it's just rare if you'll pardon the pun, you won't find it in your local Tesco but a good butcher might be able to sort you out.

lol, i know its not illegal... theres justa tendancy for people in this country to be against it for cultural reasons... i think its mainly down to seeing horses as the "pet" or the working connotations.... most horse racers wouldnt want the public to see thier thoroughbred horse turned into a couple of steaks towards the end of its life (as tasty as it might be)
i was just wondering where i might be able to get a bit from...
i was thinking about a butchers, although i get the feeling if i walk into a butchers and ask for horse meat theyre gonna be thinking wheres the punchline!
lol
Re: I want to eat a horse steak...
You'd be suprised how many people think it is because they never see it anywhere but as you say that's a result of the culture over here, not the law :)

I wouldn't be so sure. Wasn't there a piece on horse meat on The F Word last season? Same with goat and a few other unusual things.

Personally I'm loath to see the lack of good butchers. You'll also find recommendations if you ask from one whos keen; quite a few places I've tried just shrug at you. Its also nice ot ask where the animal comes from. IMO a good butcher always has bacon with rind that hasn't been soaked in water and well hung meat; not this bright red stuff you see in supermarkets.
Back on track; I think you should build up to asking about horse and not blurt it our straight away, they'll think you're under the impression they sell dodgy meat! It might bring up the same response as asking for dog!

Christ no, don't buy mussels there, completely overpriced.

I think the problem over here is that horses are a pretty animal, where as cows, sheep and pigs are just cute.
Its science.
Re: I want to eat a horse steak...
Yeah it's quite a lot like beef - in fact if you've eaten a steak in France or Belgium and it didn't explicitly say "boeuf" or "vache" on it there's a reasonable chance it was horse meat.

Horse meat's alright. I hear that it's better than Goat, but I think the idea of curried Goat actually sounds quite nice.
It's certainly more French than British.

Yeah, it's the same reason there's more 'save the whales' groups than 'save the fungal lichen' ones
