    Wine?

Would it be appropriate to include discussion on wine in this room?

I drink copious quantities varying significantly in price and quality. Perhaps some of us could write our own reviews rather than lift reviews from newspapers. I like Malcolm Gluch's 20 point scoring system though.

    oooooh.....to tell some one how!

    Crikey.

    OK....if its white....fridge first.

    Then open when chilled.

Pour 1/3 glass into very clean glass......note colour. Try to compare it to natural produce, colours we might all understand.......corn gold, lemon yellow......highlighter pen!

Seriously.....next is smell.....you must swish it around a lot to get a level of vapour to evapourate.....you need to be able to sniff it both in short sniffs...and then a few big deep lung fulls.

Then think through your whole life off food and drink and cars and houses and great parties and bad restaurants...and pull out a few thoughts....things it makes you remember....and try to impart to us what you feel in your nose.

Dont be shy.....and for fs dont fret if it DOES smell of fresh cut grass with a hint of lemon....tell us...think of herbs and flowers.....and soil....and nasty things too.....diesel......soot........tree bark......dampness.....

make is SOUND like it smells....

then.....(that takes a few minutes for my head to get the memory back to tie it to the flavour...and sometimes it never comes)

then.....a small glug....hold in your mouth....wait for the alcohol to bite your tongue,......slosh it about in your gob....and then. (hard bit...no dribbling) suck air through your teeth while holding the wine either side of your tongue...and then swallow....

the air allows your nasal passage to grab the hints and as you swallow the taste changes......only a bit, but it does.

Acid? Leaves? Sweet? Lemon? Sugar? Sugar Candy? Leather? What is your tongue saying , and the coolest thing....is it ANYTHING LIKE what it smelled of?

Cos its not always related? Does your HEAD change......does your thought.......your mental image, swap?

I love vino.....Deckard has furnished me with the finest bottle of wine I have ever tasted...a Wolf Blass Black Label 1996......

    hold on

got the empty to smell right now.....

Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz blend......but not your normal .....oh no....

this STILL smells of the following......it was ....fantastic beyond belief (and was over 14% too)

Christmas pudding, Plums, Oak table....wooden chests for keeping toys in.....black currant....and earth

Thats from an EMPTY BOTTLE....and I PROMISE....Zak SWEARS HERE....I SWEAR...I REMEMBER every drop.

Wow Zak, spot on m8. Thats the classic way. Some changes I would suggest though. Make sure the glass you use is large.....I used to use half pint lager classes. As long as the tops go in and not out so that when you swill the liquor stays in the glass all should be fine. However, most supermarkets sell good large wine glasses now. Next....I only have the glass an eighth full. Loads of room to swill. When you smell, stick all your nose and mouth in the glass and take a deep breath. Next...to chill or not to chill..mmmmm... Jury out on this one for me. My old man swears by serving white wine at room temperature. I'm not sure he is right, but then again, why does a red have to be at room temperature to get the full flavour and not a white? Next....if you can open the wine the night/day before. Some will even decanter the wine into a jug. This lets the air get ast it and improve flavours and balance.

So as Zak says, but dont be restricted. Do it your way. Anyway that gets over the experience of drinking that wine is good. Also lets have BAD as well as good ones. We all have personal favourites and dislikes (for some reason I dont like Hardy's ???). If you review then lets us know...

    Where you bought the wine
What you paid for it (and what the full price is if it was on offer)
    The name of the wine
    Vintage (yEAR)
Place of Origin (Country Region etc)
    Grape or grapes.
    The closure (cork, plastic,screwcap)
Marks out of 20 bearing in mind the price (value).
    The Review

Perhaps once we get a few reviews someone can suggest a wine (easily available) that we can all go and buy and taste on the same day. Then we can argue away .

Long time since I had Wolf Blass wines Zak, but as I remember they were always pleasant experiences. Honoop. Nice choice of 3 good value whites. I'd be very interested to find which you liked most.

Just as a quicky, I have a 2002 Marlborough Oyster Bay Chardonnay (New Zealand) in front of me. Opened yesterday when I had a glass. I'm on a diet otherwise I'd finished it yesterday. Bought from Sainsbury's for about £5. On the nose, its rather full of vanilla (heavily oaked) and not much else comes through. Some melon and the ususal lemon and a rather unusual hint of spring greens. The taste is softer than I would expect and peachy. Overall not bad for £5, but I wont rush out and buy a case. 15.5 out of 20.

Ok, here goes... this is the part where I decide I should give up trying to taste wine and stick to burning my tastebuds out and losing braincells drinking tequila and vodka!!

    The Sainsbury's Chilean Chardonnay
Not sure of the price of this one, it was bought for me!
Colour - very yellowy light (bit hard to describe to be honest!)
Smell - Acidy, similar to marker pens
Tastes - woody with a bite, this is a very sharp wine
All in all not bad but wouldnt rate it as one of my fav's. Give it about 12/20 as I dont know the price!

Kumala Sauvignon Blanc Semillon - £4.99
This one is much lighter in colour almost creamy
Smell - this wine smells sunny, nice and bright
Taste - much smoother than the chilean, slightly sweeter due to less bite. Tastes very fresh and herby.
I prefered this one to the chiliean. Was much more drinkable and went down a treat! Flavour was much better.
    I give this one 16/20.

Didnt taste it with food as suggested by Zak, as my dish has chillies in it and thought my sense of taste would be a bit screwy!!

Thanks Honoop. I just might look for a bottle of the Kumala. Not had many South Africa wines for a while. If you fancy trying something different, try a South African Pinotage red!

Good point Joel. No reason not to include fine beer as well as fine wine. Any reviews of Real Ale would be most welcome I'm sure m8. Also, anyone wants me to do an in-depth tasting of a dozen malt whiskies please send me the samples (minimum 70cl bottles).
