    New Meat!

Yesterday I tasted some meats I have never tried before... and was pleasantly suprised!!

Marlin - Fantastic, it really was ace. It was cut into large cubes and put onto kebabs and barbecued, was meaty like tuna, but white meat. I'll definatly try that again! Is it available in supermarkets? I've never really looked.....

Ostrich - this was really tasty - cooked very rare, tasted similar to steak but less fibrous and very tender.

Kangeroo - again rather like steak, although quite rich and gamey tasting and very chewy. I ate it, but not sure I would have again!

Rabbit - (never tried before as I never fancied eating fluffy bunny!) BUT it was very good. Rather like chicken but more moist and more....meaty! Very slightly gamey, but not enough to notice really.

Mmmm... I like trying new food!!!!

I absolutely love ostrich meat but it is a tad expensive have not had it in a while, I was working in the trade when it was first introduced in Europe about 10 years ago and we used to do a lot of it then.
Rabbit rules, a lot of German families have bunnies in hutches for eating.
Never had kangaroo and despite training as a waiter under a master chef who specialised in fish I dont think I have ever tried Marlin although I have seen a dead one picked off the beach once, was being brought to local environmental peeps to check its cause of death although personally I think it was cold as it had strayed into the North Sea and was not in warmer waters.

I know you like one particular Marlin Sair , but to eat one !!!!.

I still prefer Tuna to Marlin or Swordfish though, although for kebabs it's monkfish every time with a watercress sauce.

    ....

Barebcued tuna is fab too, but it was really nice to have something different for a change. It's so easy to overcook tuna on a BBQ, and make it very dry, but the Marlin was cooked through and was still moist and yummy

Dolphin....? No... that doesn't sound right....

I visit the carribean quite a bit as I have family that live there, and when the fishermen bring their nets in sometimes there is a dolphin caught in the nets. If it's ok they will release it, but if it has been injured they will kill it and have it on the BBQ when they land the catch.

I just happened to be on the docks when they were having some and got to try it.

I have tried both Gazelle and Zebra whilst visiting Kenya a few years back, both were cooked on the barbecue and they tasted great, very fresh too.

    hmm..
Shark (texture of steak, but tastes like chicken)
Alligator (more like pork, but again, a similar taste to chicken)
Swordfish (Similar to Shark, but a slighty more fishy taste)
    Ostrich (quite steaky)
Kangaroo (have to be gentle with it, cook it too long and it goes far too chewy - needs to be pink)
Squid (Really has to be cooked quick or it goes rubbery)
    Octopus (See above)
Tuna Steaks are *really* good bbq'ed

I think that's it on the exotic meats list so far..

Dont like the idea of eating dolphin, you shouldn't eat anything that has a higher IQ than a Sun reader.

I see no mention of horse here. Come on someone must of tried it .

Saw it in sale once in France but didnt really feel like eating it.

Reading this thread its strange how we have these taboos about eating certain animals. For instance the dolphin thing also the horse. We have a horse at home and the thought of eating him seems strange to say the least whereas eating the pigs we keep isnt a problem. Strange.

Mmmm... it is odd that really......
I have to say though, I watched "Escape To River Cottage" the other day, and Hugh Fernley-Whatsit sent his two piggies to saughter, having fed them and cared for them for however many months it was. He even gave them names!
Much as I love bacon, I couldn't have done that I don't think! Not when you know their personalities etc The worst part was when he cooked the head... he must have recongised it's face!!!

I think I'd be a vegetarian if I thought about it too much..... (so I'm not going to think about it - I couldn't live without bacon, a nice juicy steak, barbecued chicken... mmmmm!!!! )

    Go On. Think about it.

To those of us that find it difficult to eat another mammal, it seams hypercrytical to regard horse meat differently to cow meat. But then again, it's all a personal thing, no?
