If ALDI can manage to sell UK fruit & veg, why can't Tesco?
I've done a couple of shops in Aldi to make sure this is fact and not just me living in "anti Tesco" land...
but , sure enough... I can buy Apples and Celery, and Cabbage, and Leeks and other UK, in season produce, CHEAPLY from Aldi... and yet Tesco seems incapable of providing stuff thats not from Africa, Australia, Spain, Italy etc.
What on EARTH is that all about?
And cream cheese..lets talk cream cheese.
Aldi cream cheese... we bought some to try (with the UK celery and UK carrots) and it was divine. So we went back for more and sure enough... an award from some cheese competition somewhere. I'm not suprised.. it's lovely.
Now go try Tesco cream cheese, and once you've got your head out of the toiet, as the fat Italian Opera singer says... Go Compare.
OK.. Aldi have a skill and a half with Paintshop Pro and other people's logo's ... I don't buy that stuff... check out the quantity of Palm oil before purchase....
but the vegetables... how do THEY get UK produce when Tesco can't/won't?
/rant over

Never understood why people don't like Aldi or Lidl tbh, some of the best stuff is from there.

There is no retailer selling us everything cheaply .The most important is to get people into the store and teach them that 'this shop is cheap or/and represents good value for money' .When that's done ,the retailers can do with shoppers whatever they want (almost) :D .Tesco used to try harder, now, just does not have to, the money is made anyway. We have learnt to spend money there.

if that were the only fact... it would be ok, cos it would go in cycles.
I think it's because they think we (the buying public) want immaculate fruit and veg, of predetermined (porn star) size.
Apples are my favourite whinge at the mo.... when I go to Herfordshire I see billions.... billions.
And trying to BUY one in a supermaket less than 50 miles away is impossible.
Apples... you don't get more ENGLISH than apples.
I'd buy French.. they do apples well too.... they should, we all share the cider love in history.
But South Africa!

I like the fact that Lidl has the cheapest price for milk anywhere, in fact its pretty much cheap everything. That makes me a happy person because its leaves me more cash to spend on buying bits of tech.

Not sure what you're going on about Zak ;) My tesco is full of fruit and veg from the UK, hardly anything from abroad by comparison. Today there were Ergremont Russets, Cox, and Gala all from Blighty, as well as all the tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, mushrooms etc. Citrus fruits and the Granny Smith were about the only things not from Blighty in store.

Ill have to agree with you there, Tesco is pretty well stocked with plenty of British produce.

gahhh apples..... there was UPROAR in Evesham a few years back - for those that don't know, the Vale of Evesham is pretty much veg mecca in the UK, it's well understood that the first asparagus of the year is got from there and there's acrea and acres and acres of all sorts of orchards and frut everywhere you look. And Safeways... big shiny new new shop IN THE MIDDLE OF ALL THESE ORCHARDS seriously, the trees were almost in the car park... and they're selling Granny Smiths from bloody Chile..... it's MADNESS... :censored:

South East. Lots of the produce is East Anglian so not too far to travel. I've even got two sacks of potatoes in the shed direct from the local farmer ;) (Though opening the boot on a dark night and dragging them onto my shoulders must have looked quite dodgy :p)

They do try and sell the chepest and show no loyalty or concenr for the environment.
TBH though its the fault of the consumer who wants their seasonal fruit and veg all year round.
Stopped buying veg from supermarkets a while ago as the farm shops around are competitive and taste so much better. If you only buy seasonal you can save a fortune. I have to admit I am culprible for buying out of season fruit.
I have to put Kent's hand up as the garden of England.

Re: If ALDI can manage to sell UK fruit & veg, why can't Tesco?
I tend to pickup stuff in a variety of places, my local supermarkets are reasonable at getting British produce, but its not a patch on the greengrocers , or the farmers markets. I am always surprised at the prices at the local farmers market, a lot of stuff is cheaper than tesco, and tastes a hell of a lot better. Think my favourite is venison.
DG you Kent based? Which bit?
On the subject of seasons, I was very surprised to see Britsh fresh strawberries in Tesco yesterday.

Tesco Walkden ( it's a new Massssssive tesco, so big in fact you need GPS locations for different isles!) has lots of british produce and so does Asda here at Horwich.

Another Kent here, with a mainly UK fruit/veg aisle in Tesco and Sainsbury's.
Must be another "grim up North" thing.
NB: Anything North of South London is North.
