Just one drink

Ok, since this is particularly relevant to me today, I thought I'd start a thread on the subject.

The situation is as follows: You're going out for a meal with friends, you're driving and you can't crash over because of work the next day. You've got approximately 3 hours till you need to drive home, so you feel it's safe to have 1 drink of 2.5 units or less.

What do you have?


If you're really fussy about what drinks you have with a particular meal, assume the meal is a curry.

Either a pint of the local IPA if it's good and try and make it last, or a G&T, which I can make last

IPA or similar low alcohol ale or beer, something tasty but not strong. A good pub will have something local like Kalniel suggests.

Shandy would do the trick. Or just man up and have a coke, do you really need to have a drink knowing you're going to drive later?

A low strength pint. For curry it would be lager, but almost all other times a local real ale.

With food a glass of wine. Other than that I prefer to avoid any booze when driving.

Quite. But the question posted by OP suggested that you were going to have a drink up to 2.5 units.

Stella shandy if I'm driving, just the one. Then coke there after!

I'll generally have no more than a pint if driving, and quite often I stick to a half (or nothing at all). I'd go with the general suggestion of a decent-quality IPA, or failing that a continental lager.

If you're drinking in the restaurant they'll probably do 330ml bottles, which are more than half a pint but less than a pint, so a pretty good option if you're only after one drink and you've got the willpower to make a small bottle last

Which is why I suggested a shandy first. And a coke is 0 units which is "2.5 units or less."
