Welsh Whisky: Penderyn :-)
Oh this is a bottle of beauty.
I was looking for a bottle for my Dad's 65th back earlier this year, and while perusing, I spotted a stunning bottle called Penderyn from Wales. Looked pretty enough,,, but that could be marketing.
The old man ended up with a cracker from Scotland (Skapa, The Orcadian) but Pendryn kept pulling at me all through March.
In April I decided to treat myself, so a bottle of Welsh gold was purchased... and it is heaven.
Smooth as silk, you an taste ever inch of the barrels it was in
and I quote "The award winning single malt whisky from the only distillery in Wales. Our unique distilled single malt whisky is matured in bourbon barrels and finished in Madeira casks to impart a generous flavour of subtle complexity. "
well... ignoring the bumph.. this is as smooth as a bottle of Irish Jamesons but it's 100 times better.
I think I have fallen for this one..... it's divine!

Damn bottle is too tall for my booze cupboards though...... won't last long!
Re: Welsh Whisky: Penderyn :-)
Might have to try some of that its made not far from me :)
Re: Welsh Whisky: Penderyn :-)
Which did you go for? I'm developing a bit of a taste for whisky as I get older and I tried a bottle of the regular about 18 months ago. I thought it was ok, but was certainly one to keep an eye on for the future. As a big fan of the peated whiskies (Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Caol Ila and Lagavulin in particular) I bought a bottle of the Penderyn Peated Edition when I spotted it in Tesco about 8 months back and it was... it's not often I decide it's not worth finishing the bottle ;)
Re: Welsh Whisky: Penderyn :-)
Hmmmm, must say I've never been tempted by it yet, but on your say I may give it a go next time I buy. On a side note, a message from my son today :
"Eh up pops. Your birthday pressie's in the post. Hopefully you'll like it. It's just a 'single' present cos I know you don't like it when you get those 'blended' presents."
Now, that's really got me thinking :) I'll let you know what it is when it gets here :)
Re: Welsh Whisky: Penderyn :-)
i love a good single malt may try it if not too Expensive. I prefer american bourbon style whiskys though as a preference, i love jack d and Jim beam expecially the Jim beam black label stuff thats slightly stronger.
I keep saying to myself one day i'll get one of those expensive jack daniels gold medal whiskey bottles but they cost about £90 for 75cl :( And i cant buy expensive whisky cos the wife drinks it with me then it goes too quickly.
Re: Welsh Whisky: Penderyn :-)
If I recall a bottle of Penderyn should set you back around £40, so pretty cheap as far as half decent whisky goes. If you're a JD fan have you tried Gentleman Jack?
Re: Welsh Whisky: Penderyn :-)
I'd argue JD Single Barrell over Gentleman Jack, it's about a fiver a bottle more but is definitely worth it.
Will give the Pendryn a go next paycheck though, because it's always good to try something new, though the peated sounds to be more the type of whisky I prefer (huge Laphroaig fan)

No haven't tried it will mention it to wife for fathers day.
Re: Welsh Whisky: Penderyn :-)
Pretty sure we had the bloke that runs the show behind this come to speak to us in school a few years back. Some sort of careers day, completely forgot about it. Decent enough guy. Might try a bottle now that I'm old enough to appreciate this kind of stuff.

Single malt Madeira finished.
WARNING TO PEAT LOVERS
this has no peat at all.. it as far from peat as it's possible to be
it's heavenly
I too love Laphroig. but this is NOT it !
Don't wanna put-off dedicated whisky drinkers, but this Penderyn Madeira finished is THE whisky for people who don't like whisky to try...
it is as smooth as a newly baized snooker table.....

you may adore this Penderyn then. it's matured in bourbon barrels and it's clear to the taste :)
Re: Welsh Whisky: Penderyn :-)
A good reasonably priced blend to keep an eye open for is Bailie Nicol Jarvine (BNJ). Its my easy drinking evening glass filler. Its a good blend, and I think its far superior to Johnnie Walker and the other popular brands.
I also rate Scapa and finished a good evening on Cragganmore a few weeks back, need to try that one again on sober taste buds.
Re: Welsh Whisky: Penderyn :-)
Can't say I was impressed, but then I like it smoky, peaty, and not all too smooth

and on the peated edition
"oily, clanking, thick whisky. Pleasant in part but something here just doesn't add up - on the nose especially. The most unsuiatble Penderyn of all" (78)
Re: Welsh Whisky: Penderyn :-)
oh I seeeeeeeeee
well I like a little peat once every few months, but on the whole, ... that one stays in the cupboard.
Re: Welsh Whisky: Penderyn :-)
I got a bottle for my birthday, wasn't sure what to make of it at first since I've never had or heard of whisky from Wales.
Have to say was pleasantly surprised and would recommend it.
