No more milk for me - Alternatives needed
Had a pretty bad week with feeling pretty sick most of the day after too much tea & feeling fine in the evening, would appear I'm lactose intolerant (been having lactose free milk and been much better since mid week, but pretty bad after a white tea with the normal stuff). I've tried drinking it black but it's not as nice :(
Aside from the lactose free milk (it has a weird taste and is pretty expensive) has anyone tried any of the other types of milk alternative? I have already tried the soya milk (alpro both sweetened and unsweetened) and not very keen on it as to me the unsweetened has a weird nutty taste and the sweetened I can taste the apple juice in
Anyone got any experience with the oat/rice milk or any others? Looking for something cheaper and not as nasty I can bung in my tea and on my cereal :)
Re: No more milk for me - Alternatives needed
Soya milks vary a lot for taste I find so it's worth trying more brands. Some are much more soya-beany than others. I find Tesco value unsweetened has less obvious flavour than some in tea & coffee, depends on your personal impression and whether you have sugar in drinks &c.
At 59p a litre it's a very reasonable long life one, I've had expensive brands I've liked less. :)
I sometimes have Tesco calcium-enriched sweetened soya drink on cereal as it's got a bit more body, again depends on the flavour of cereal etc.
Re: No more milk for me - Alternatives needed
As already mentioned, there are quite a few different varieties of Soya milk, I would recommend visiting a health food shop, our local one was very helpful
Re: No more milk for me - Alternatives needed
Thought they all tasted pretty much the same, will give them a try :)
I don't have any sugar in my drinks so will give those a shot

Goats milk is an alternative, or I'm told sheeps milk... not tried sheeps milk tho...

That is what I am using at the minute :) it is pretty expensive and has a slightly weird aftertaste though
Re: No more milk for me - Alternatives needed
Have you tried Non-dairy creamer aka coffee creamer aka Coffee-Mate in tea/coffee?
I'd not want to you it on cereal though.
lactose intolerance comes in different levels of severity, some people find just skimmed milk in tea/coffee has little effect.
Also watch out for cheese, a lot of people with lactose intolerance find that cheese triggers more extreme reactions.

One thing to try is redbush tea, for me this tastes like a normal cuppa with milk in it already.
Re: No more milk for me - Alternatives needed
Just a point, I started having unsweetened soya milk about 2 years ago. At first I thought the same as you about the strange taste, but now im here to it and actually like it...normal milk has a weird taste to me now! So maybe just give it a chance and maybe youll get used to it.
Re: No more milk for me - Alternatives needed
As a coffee drinker I gave up on trying to get soya milk to work, it just curdles too easily so I got used to drinking it black. I don't drink tea but i'm told it doesn't curdle as easily in tea and tastes much the same as normal milk.
As for cereal i'm an Oat milk person, I found the same as you, soya is just too "beany" if unsweetened and too sickly if sweetened, although the best sweetened one I found was So Good Soya Life/ - not as sickly as the other sweetened soya milks.
My wife has the Alpro Unsweetened stuff on her cereal, but she heats it up too so I don't know if that's different.
For me it's Oatly Organic Oat Milk all the way, it's not sweetened and for me tastes fine on cereal, just make sure you shake it well every time. The organic one I found best, tastes very different to the other one.
Rice Milk I found to be very sweet again.

I've been having it in tea for a couple of years (only one that used milk was my mum and she switched to alpro), still not very keen on it
Pob, I've actually heard the opposite, it's the skimmed milk that causes more of a reaction, I used to drink full fat milk and was fine with that, yoghurt is meant to be ok too if it's a live yoghurt as the bacteria eat the lactose sugars
Lucio, thanks for the suggestion I'll give it a shot :)
Barakka, thanks I'll add those to a list of things to try, it's only with tea not with coffee so isn't too much of an issue
Re: No more milk for me - Alternatives needed
My little one has a reaction to full-on dairy and Soya. She's been on rice milk (with added calcium) for about 10 months now and is thriving on it. I've tried it, and the only way I can describe it is like it's like coconut milk, but not as sweet. I could drink a glass of it, but I wouldn't like it on my cornflakes unless it really wasn't an option....
Re: No more milk for me - Alternatives needed
Alpro Soya OR So good Soya milk.

Have you looked into lactase supplements? I'm fairly certain they are over the counter. Or at the very least, available without a prescription.
Although, if you're anything like the patients I've seen you'll prefer the taste hit vs taking meds. They're generally work pretty well though from what I have seen and help you avoid the side effects of low calcium (I haven't seen any publications on efficacy though, I will have to get back to you). If you do find yourself taking regular calcium supplements it may be worth taking a look if you're going to be taking meds anyway.
