    Comfort eating

ok people, as you may know, us girls especially, like to comfort eat, some more than others, and i'm one of them. I especially like sweet things, the more sugar the better! The thing is, sugar, because it's a simple CHO (carbohydrate) you only get a quick boost of energy that lifts your spirits for a short period of time, then after a little while you plummet to a place lower than before, and despite the fact i KNOW it's the sugar that does this, what do i do...? yup, you guessed it, i reach for the sugar! it's a really difficult circle to break, but i feel i HAVE to do it, before it gets so far out of control and my weight becomes so bad i lose the will to even TRY to shift it. Now, at the moment, i wouldnt say i was fat, but i'm not thin, i'm not even trim, and gyms scare me, running seems pointless, and i dont even want to imagine myself in a swimming costume (blah blah usual female self esteem crap) and on top of all that i have social anxiety, so all in all, it's not a great situ to be in. HOWEVER, i need some help to come up with some alternatives to cure my sugar cravings. I've tried to replace chocolate/crisps with dried apricots, and they do work, but i'm afraid the ones that i like most are the vanilla flavoured ones from sainsburys and, well, i have my suspiscions that they may be dowsed in sugary syrup :/ AND they're really expensive I've cut out horrendously sugary drinks and just stick to a pint of milk a day and DIET coke or water where possible but when i'm feeling particularly down (like this week for example) i just reach for the choccy biccies and sugary sweets.

Someone help me! I'm addicted to sugar!

there's not much you can do - just make sure there's nothing like that around - replace with fruit. I try to keep things like apples around - same sugar rush, but better for you!

Try some Lychees, some think they look a little like sheeps eyeballs (not me!) but they're quite sweet and the peeling off the skin keeps you occupied for a while.
There's a thin person in every fat person.....that's because they just ate them.

Try eating more filling things...things with lots of fibre & stuff. So make sure u have brown/grain bread with ur sandwiches & general stuff like that. Fibre makes u feel fuller than the otehr stuff so it should stop or slow ur snacking. Worked wonders for me while i was working desk job since i eat & eat & eat when i get bored!

I sympathise and knew someone like you, though in their case it tended to be ice cream rather than sugar! Though it took some time, they were able to resist most of the time

In my experience its all a matter of programming yourself. One time I was a right state when it came to food, but managed to sort myself out. Part of it was a lifestyle and full diet change. Try to take control when you shop for food, or if you live at home go shopping with your parents/spouse/whatever. Try to avoid puttting anything in the trolley which may tempt you (sugar, sweets et al), and stick with fruits. Pineapple is quite sweet as is cantaloupe melons. Also grapes are nice to chew on. Try to stick with three good meals a day and make sure you are nice and full after each meal. This will help to avoid the dreaded munchies! When you go to work/go out/whatever try to avoid taking small change for those vending machines and snack shops.

For drinks (And I am assuming you drink tea or coffee with buckets of sugar) try to wean yourself onto fruit juice and similar.

It'll take time but eventually you'll look at sugar and think "Ugh can't eat that stuff now, wheres some nice fruit when you need it?"

Good luck and avoid putting yourself to temptation, cause people almost always cave in!

Don't shop when you're hungry, and just don't buy any snack type foods. It's easy for me, because no matter how much of a junk food addict I am, I'm even more of a tightwad, so I refuse to buy biscuits etc. just 'cos they're expensive.

Eat more starchy foods that release sugar into your bloodstream slowly so you don't get the yo-yo effect.

You really should try and find a form of exercise that suits you, cycling is a good one, and practical if you can use it as your main mode of transport. Exercising gently still makes you feel better overall, and excercising hard gives you the classic endorphin rush! As I understand it, regular excercise not only makes you fitter, it also helps you to regulate your nutrient levels and eating habits better.

i think excercise, be it cycling, running, goin to the gym and using their fitness machines or takin up a sport is the best way to sort it all out.....the endorphin rush is irreplaceable it makes you feel so great. it'll keep u nice and trim too, and maybe one day you may be able to use swimming as an excercise without being embarassed

Now I agree on this...BUT I know how damn HARD it is to start with...and how HARD to is to prove.

Excercise SEEMS to be the most uncomfortable feeling in the world if you aren't used to it.

Its only when you have the right MOOD for it, does it get to ya.

My suggestion, for FOOD anyway, is the fruit and veg trick.

Lots of bags of carrots, lots of bags of apples, lots of nice oranges, lots of pears, lots of grapes....

    lots of it all...

and its CHEAP......if you spend £10 a week on carrots, apples and grapes, you'll have LOTS

Then another ACE idea is RYVITA with the fruit.....its very fibrous..and filling. And you CAN have something nice with it.....one spread of low fat cream cheese per slice, and then a few grapes ....have 3 of those and you wont WANT any more chocolate for hours!

Also helps to try to vary the fruit you eat so that you don't get bored. Try some tropical fruit and stuff you've never tried before. Pineapple, mango, melons, star fruit, figs, Papaya's etc etc...

I had a problem of just randomly eating stuff when I was bored. Put me on a good bit of flab, so heres some ways to counter them:

    1) Sit with a pint glass of water with you wherever you are (or more than a pint if possible) and keep it filled. Instead of getting something to nibble on, drink some water.

I used to hate water, but I'm quite accustomed to it now. You also need to drink at least 1.5ltrs of water a day (about 2.75 pints). If you are doing exercise increase that to 2ltrs (3.5 pints). And they are minimums! Water is also far better for you than tea or coffee or fizzy drinks, or even fruit juice in large quantities. Also, your body can often confuse being thirsty with being hungry, so by drinking plenty of water you will feel less peckish. I must get through at least 4 or 5 pints a day of water, works wonders.

    2) Say fit. Take up a sport such as badminton, tennis, football, netball, hockey, etc. Anything really. Do it on a regular basis with some friends. It will make you more fit, altho it won't necessarily lose you any fat. Even so, the more fit you are the better you will feel. I find doing a sport is a much more fun way of exercising, as there is a competative or social aspect to it. I currently do an hour of badminton a week at the moment. Hasn't lost me any fat, but I am now more fit Swimming is also really good for general body exercise.

    3) Lose the flab. For this you need to do some harsh exercising, namely running, cycling or rowing. To make your body start losing fat content, you need to get your heart rate into a certain zone. Take your age from 220 and then find 60%-80% of that. You must get your heartrate up into that zone and keep it there. Varying the intensity of the exercise during the time you are doing it will help also (ie cycling faster or slower). I have yet to get around to this one, but I know it works

    4) Have at least 3 meals a day. And have them at regular times. Any less than 3 meals and your body will go into starvation mode and start storing the energy as fat, making you feel tired and depressed all the time as well as making you put on weight. If you have 4 meals a day, make them smaller than if you had 3, so you are not taking in any extra calories etc. Also by having more than 3 meals a day you have the added advantage of not getting the munchies as much inbetween.

Then do everything as already mentioned by other people, fibre etc.

Oh, do not be tempted to go on the Atkins diet or anything, they are not good for you, nor a long term solution. Also don't bother buying low-carb foods, as they do not work. Basically balence your diet, exercise and cut out your bad habits!

Also alcohol ain't great for you either

    Ok, where to start!

    hmm... excersise.
Right, as i said in my first post, i suffer from social anxiety. I find it EXTREMELY difficult and daunting even thinking about going to a strange place on my own. Sometimes even places i do know or shops, i fund difficult to go to if i'm on my own. I do know this is a problem, and i know i need to deal with them, but i've got too much other stuff to do right now. Hmm, because of this, going to the gym, swimming or playing any sort of team sport is a no-go area. Believe it or not, i have no particularly sporty friends, and therefore, no one to join a team with. Dont get me wrong, i know the sports i *should* be doing but i just cannot find it in me to go along and do them. You may not understand the way it makes me feel, but it's extremely daunting.

Ok, food. Now, I do like fruit, and i *try* to eat it, but my mum has this attitude that if she buys fruit it just ends up in the bin so wont put any in with the weekly shop unless it's really boring apples or bananas (sorry, they just dont excite me!). I *do* like pineapple and clemintines and nectarines and plums and mmmmmm but i make the mistake of eating too many at once and well...er... we all know what happens after a sudden burst of fibre heh! But yes i do try and eat as much fruit as i can. I also eat either granary or "best of both" bread cos i dont like the thought of what white bread does to your insides *shudder*. Just my weaknesses come from my love of cheese, pasta, crisps and chocolate!

As for drinking water, now, i tend to sit at my pc with a pint of robinsons diluting juice and keep topping it up (i put hardly any juice in it, it's just there to give it some flavour) and go through about a bottle of robinsons a week - however many pints of water that equates to heh. I do that mainly for my skin. But if i'm wanting something fizzy ( REALLY dont like fizzy water *yuk*) I'll grab a can of diet coke out the fridge (1.2 cals per can people!). Dont tend to drink a lot of alcohol either, maybe once every 2 weeks and even then it's only a bout 3 vodkas heh.

This blasted weather also isnt helping me, it's just making me even more depressed! i'm a summer baby, i love the sunshine!

Being stressed about going out to new places is not rare. Didn't know its official name of Social Anxciety, but trust me, its all to common.

Excercise however, is within your mental comfort zone. Its walking on your own. Its doing sit up's. Its press ups in your room. Its step ups at home. You know.....to keep yourself fit. Its going up and down steps a lot. I mean...a lot.

Fruit....going in the bin. I was the worst for this...buy it...stick in fridge, intend to use over course of 4 or 5 days, end up lobbing half of it out Now I use it when I get it....fast. The more veg you eat the less money you spend on meat, which is HUGELY MORE EXPENSIVE anyway.

There is nothing wrong with cheese....just eat more crackers with it....less cheese, more fruit. Lets face it....2 apples, a big slice of cheddar and 4 ryvita and you're gonna be loaded.

1 hour later, when you feel hungry, pint of water.

The ONLY thing I find hard to grasp, because I dont get it, is a Chocolate Lusting....the NEED for chocolate. I just dont see that at all.....

Choice 1: Bar of Dairy Milk/Galaxy etc....
    Choice 2: Bowl of pasta
Choice 3: Slice of Brie and a lump of French bread....

I'd be stuck between 2 and 3, but 1 isnt even in the running....not even close. So the chocolate thing needs nailing down, doesn't it?

How about just not buying it, and then having a low fat, hot chocolate drink instead occassionaly? To be fair , that probably stands out as being an idea from someone who clearly DOESN'T understand the chocolate craving....sorry
